William Thompson

ROCKWOOD William E. "Bill" Thompson, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2013, at home in Rockwood.He was born Jan. 17, 1938, in Pleasant Hill, Tenn., to Carl A. and Ola Dell Scarbrough Thompson, the first of four children. He was graduated from Pleasant Hill High School, Tennessee Technological University with a B.S. degree, Middle Tennessee State University with a M.S. degree plus 45 hours. He taught school in Florida at Orla Vista Elementary School where he met his wife Pat. They married in 1962 and returned to Crossville where he taught and coached football and boys and girls basketball, going the next year to Cumberland County High School where he coached the B-Team football and girls basketball. Cleveland High School was his next stop where he coached girls' basketball and assisted in baseball and football. His final move was to Rockwood, Tennessee, where he coached boys' basketball for twenty-three years, compiling an impressive won/loss record, being named all-Tri-state coach of the year twice and TSSAA-AA coach of the year in 1990. During this time he was the principal of Rockwood Middle School and continued in that capacity until his retirement in December of 2011. During these last years he became a Rockwood City Councilman, a position he was holding at the time of his death. He enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to serve the city in this capacity. Coach Thompson, as he was often called, was very touched and honored when the Rockwood Middle School gymnasium, where he coached his high school basketball games, was named The Coach Bill Thompson Gymnasium. He was also named a Roane County Treasure in November 2011. Furthermore, he was a member of Rockwood Civitan Club. All of these honors and activities took second place to his family. The family held the dearest place in his heart. Having his children and grandchildren around him, vacationing with them, and attending their activities was most important to him.He will be greatly missed by his wife and best friend Pat; his sons, Guy (Robin) Thompson, Craig (Jennifer) Thompson; his daughter, Traci (Jerry) Mioduski; his nine grandchildren, Taylor Mioduski, Alex Bowman, Cheyenne Thompson, Dakota Thompson, Andrew Thompson, Madison Mioduski, Riley Thompson, Shasta Thompson, and Carson Thompson; his sisters, Mary (Chip) Whiting, Orlando, Fla.; Barbara (George) O'Reilly, Huntsville, Ala.; his brother, Jim (Linda) Thompson, Crossville, Tenn.; his nieces, nephews, and their children, Anella (Lon) Brolliar, Emma, Sarah Grace and Holden, Huntsville, Ala.; Blaine (Rynne) OReilly, George and Peter, Huntsville, Ala.; Wendy (Jason) Pitts, Savannah and Logan, Orlando, Fla.; Brandi (Louis) Gonzales, Raven and Rowan, Orlando, Fla.; Virgil (Jennifer) Thompson and Landon, Crossville, Tenn.; Ray E. (Sonny) Aitken, Kanosh, Utah; Yuri (Sarah) Aitken, Mark, Alexis and Ian, Fort Myers, Fla.; Valinka (Gerald) Levitt, Aiden and Ty, Utah; Trevor (Angela) Aitken, Kimber and Ashton, Wyo.; Kim (Gayla) Aitken, Chantel, Nicole, Jennifer and John, Cardston, Alberta, Canada; Michael Atiken, Salt Lake City, Utah; Scott (Phylis) Aitken, Amanda and Carol, Salt Lake City, Utah.The family would like to thank Dr. Mitchell Martin, the competent and caring nurses at Tennessee Cancer Specialists, and Dr. Angela Meadows for their compassion, encouragement, and help.Bill faithfully attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A scripture that epitomizes him is found in 2 Timothy 4:7.
