Pauline Townsend

Nannie Pauline "Polly" Campbell Townsend went home to be with her heavenly Father on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013 at the age of 94. She began her journey on July 10, 1919 in Cleveland, Tenn. Her parents were the late Annie and Luther Campbell. Pauline received her formal education at Hopewell Elementary, Bradley High School, and McKenzie Business College. As a young woman, she was offered a position with the FBI, but she turned it down to remain in Cleveland and marry the love of her life, Erwin Townsend. In her professional career, Pauline was a secretary for the President of Dixie Foundry until she became a mother. She then worked as a home economist for Cleveland Milling Company, developing special recipes and giving cooking demonstrations. She also served as a volunteer at Cleveland Community Hospital for 33 years. Pauline excelled at her favorite hobby of cooking, winning the National Delmarva Chicken Cooking Contest in 1965. She was well known for her coconut cakes, baking over 100 cakes every holiday season to gift to family and friends. Her other hobbies included gardening, solving word search and cryptogram puzzles, playing highly competitive games of Yahtzee and Old Maid with her granddaughters, and cheering on her favorite team, the Atlanta Braves. Above all else, Pauline loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a member of Georgetown Baptist Church. Pauline is now rejoicing with the loved ones who preceded her in death: siblings Ben Campbell, Thomas Gannaway Campbell, Annie Lee Kile, Mary Wattenbarger, and her husband Erwin Townsend. She leaves her beautiful legacy with her survivors, son Terry Townsend and his wife Leatha; granddaughters Tiffany Townsend and Tara Townsend; and three great granddaughters, Kaelyn, Sienna, and Clara. The celebration of her life will be held on Monday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. at Fike Funeral Home, with the Reverend Dan Dockery and Reverend Jym Hitte officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The service will conclude with a white dove release ceremony. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 4-6 p.m. and Monday from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service.
