Margaret Walker

Margaret Louise Metzler Walker passed away on Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.Margaret, "Mimi", was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Alfred Eaton "Buddy" Walker III in 2009; her parents, Leo J. Metzler and Dorothy C. Metzler; and her sister, Dorothy Horne. Born and raised in Birmingham, Ala., she was an alumn of Woodlawn High School and Birmingham Southern College where she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Margaret and Buddy moved to Chattanooga, to raise their three boys, Alfred E. Walker IV, Dean Carlisle Walker and Joseph Taylor Walker. Margaret was instrumental in growing the faith community and facilities at St. John United Methodist Church in Murray Hills where she and her husband were faithful members for many decades. Margaret served as administrator for the St. John Kindergarten program during its early years. She was a choir member, helped with community visitation and was a tireless supporter of her church and faith. Margaret and Buddy continued their work for the church in recent years by helping to establish Lighthouse Methodist Church in Ooltewah. She also was active in the scouting program and served as a den mother for her boys Cub Scout Troop. Margaret loved the outdoors, her work for her church, enjoyed family camps, living on the lake and her family."Mimi" is survived by her three sons, Alfred Walker (Beverly), of Jacksonville, Fla., Carlisle Walker (Valorie), of Gainesville, Ga., and Taylor Walker (Meg), of Signal Mountain; her brother, Leo Metzler (Lynn), of Columbia S.C.; grandchildren, A.J. Walker, Caroline Walker Ross, Dean Walker, Heather Walker Goeke, Lauren Walker Mansolf, Lindsey Walker and Kristen Walker; great-grandchildren, Carter Ross, Alyssa Ross and Piper Goeke and many nephews and nieces, Sue and Steve Swallen, Jason, Timicia and Brady Swallen; and a host of extended family and friends. The family is eternally greatfull for the special love and support provided by all of her caregivers, especially Mrs. Linda Woods.A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at St. John United Methodist Church, 3921 Murray Hills Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416.Interment at Lakewood Memory Gardens, East, on Shallowford Road, Chattanooga, for family to follow.Memorial gifts may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or the Alzheimers Association.Visit www.heritagefh.com to share words of comfort to the family and to view the memorial tribute.The family will receive friends from 4 -8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at Heritage Funeral Home and from noon-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at St. John United Methodist Church.Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 East Brained Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.
