David Akers

David Robert Akers, 66, of Chattanooga, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013.He was born April 26, 1947 in Knoxville, and grew up in Chattanooga, where he lived all of his adult life. David loved his church, Brainerd United Methodist, where he was very active as a lay leader, small group leader, and teacher of Sunday school and church services. He ran a basketball league at the church for more than 25 years; many will know him as Coach. David was an alumnus of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and continued to be a big supporter of the university and its sports programs.He was preceded in death by his father, Robert E. Akers.Survivors include his wife, Donna Akers; son, James Akers; granddaughter, Ella Madison Akers; mother, Jean S. Akers; and sister, Joan Akers Scott, and her husband, Robert Scott.Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at Brainerd United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Dennis W.
