Janet Holmes

Janet Woods Holmes, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, in a local hospital at the age of 95.Mrs. Holmes gave her life to Jesus Christ at an early age and joined New Monumental Church where she served for over 35 years. She later joined the First Baptist Church family where she gave her service to the Ladies Guild ministry for many years. She was educated at Howard High School where she graduated in 1935. She earned her Bachelor degree in Elementary Education from Tennessee State University in 1954, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She taught in the Chattanooga School system for over 25 years where she retired from teaching at the Woodmoore Elementary School.She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Mr. Robert H. Holmes; her father, Mr. Edgar Woods; her mother, Mrs. Fannie Woods; her brothers, Mr. Dewille Woods and Dr. Earl L. Woods; one sister, Ms. Regina Wilkerson; and one nephew, Mr. Earl Woods.She leaves to cherish her memories two devoted sons, Mr. Ronald (Cora) Holmes, Hyattsville, Md., and Mr. Robert Earl (Mary) Holmes, Huntsville, Ala.; one granddaughter, Ms. Kennedi Renee Holmes, Huntsville, Ala.; three nieces, Ms. Janice Woods, Ms. Jackie Woods and Ms. Cathy Hughes; two nephews, Mr. Bobby Woods and Mr. Billy Woods; special friends, Mr. John P. Franklin Sr., Mrs. Virginia Roberson, Mrs. Lisa Strickland, Mrs. Ida Ringer; and a host of other relatives and friends.Homegoing services will be held at 1 p.m. today, Sept. 7, 2013, at the First Baptist Church on E. 8th Street.The body will lie in state from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the church.Arrangements by John P.
