Peggie Bullard

Peggie Clara Sadler Bullard, 82, passed away Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, less than three months after the death of her husband, Rev. (Dr.) Andrew J. Bullard Jr.She was a native of Gainesville, Ga., who moved to Chattanooga to live with her aunt, Bessie Pica, after the death of her parents, Cleo and Lizzie Sadler. Preceding her in death were 11 siblings, Olma, Irene, Allen, Almagane, Luellyn, Mary, Alice, Missie, Learn, Cleo and Daisy; two husbands, Ernest Varner and Charles Black; and a beloved daughter, Mamie Maria Bullard.Mrs. Bullard worked for years with the Chattanooga Police department, rising from school patrol officer to Chief of School Patrol. For several years she was president of the Forgotten Child Fund, helping to raise thousands of dollars for toys and food for needy families. Mrs. Bullards many awards include the Delta Sigma Theta Community Service Award, the Pioneer Woman Award from the Chattanooga Chapter of the Coalition of 100 Black Women, and the Jefferson Award for volunteerism and public service. In 2011, she and Rev. Bullard were inducted into the African American Achievers Hall of Fame.She held dual memberships at New Enon Baptist Church and Greater Pilgrim Baptist where she wore her signature church hats, featured in an article in Parent Magazine.She leaves to cherish her memory, seven remaining children, Edna Varner, Ernest (Jacqueline) Varner, Justino (Dailah) Varner, Joaquin (Linda) Black, Yolander Palms, Rev. Andrew J. (Minister Angela) Bullard III, and Rev. Alexander J. (Marcella Kay) Bullard Sr. who assumed primary responsibility for her care; two sisters, Carolyn Jackson and Enid Buffington, who will keep her stories alive; family members, Pamela Coker, Jameshia Borders, and Andrea Jade Bullard who were at her bedside to cheer her during the months after her husbands passing. Grandchildren Julius (JJ) McShane who was a constant help to his grandparents in their home, and Andrew, Amanda, Anthony, Aaron and Andrea Grace Bullard who visited every Sunday to pray with both grandparents and continued to visit their grandmother weekly until her death. Also beloved are a host of other nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, other relatives, caregivers, a special colleague, Retired Chief Jeannette Wilkerson, friends, church members, especially Sis. Maudie Hines, who called regularly and sent good wishes, her Mt. Zion Baptist Church of LaFayette extended family, and dear neighbors from 9th Street, Alton Park, Camden Street and Brainerd.The Homegoing Celebration will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, at New Enon Baptist Church, 2302 Wilcox Blvd.The body will lie in state after noon today and the family will receive friends from 6 -7 this evening at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave.
