James Bell

James "Jim" L. Bell Jr., 92, departed this life on Wednesday, Sept 11, 2013.He was raised in Buffalo, N.Y. Jim attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. and graduated with a degree in civil engineering. He also served his country in WWII as a lieutenant.Moving to Chattanooga in 1958, Jim served his community in various activities: Elder of Fairview Presbyterian Church now Renaissance Church, former District Commissioner of the Cherokee Area Boy Scout Council, on the board of directors of Chattanooga Speech and Hearing, Blood Assurance, Chattanooga Air Pollution Control and the Chattanooga Engineers Club.Survivors include one son, James "Lowry" Bell III, of Memphis; two nephews, William T.M. Johnson Jr., of Media, Pa., and Scott W. Johnson (Anna Beth), of Blacksburg, Va.; one grandniece, Mara P. Johnson, of Blacksburg, Va.Memorial service will be 1 p.m. today, Sept 17, 2013 at Trammell Chapel, 913 ML King Blvd. The family will receive friends from noon-1 p.m.Interment will follow service at National Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Chattanooga, 423- 698-8016 or charity of your choice.Arrangements entrusted to Hardwick & Sons Funeral Home 423-267-1244.
