James Carroll

James D. Carroll, 89, died at his home Monday, March 31, 2014. Mr. Carroll, a longtime resident of Chattanooga, was a retired TVA engineer and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was born Oct. 25, 1924, in Michie, Tenn., in McNary County, the eldest son of the late Dewy and Mary Wood Carrolls 11 children. He was preceded in death by his son, Patrick H. Carroll who died in 1979 at age 23. He was also preceded in death by his four brothers, Frank, Hoyt, Elwood and Joe Carroll. Survivors include his daughter, Beverly A. Carroll; granddaughter, Rachael C. Summers, both of Chattanooga; sisters, Joyce Cochran of Memphis, Wanda Tucker and Martha Dupree of Michie, Barbara Rains of Portage, Ind., Linda Carpenter of Corinth, Miss., Mary Bassett, of Georgia, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. Mr. Carroll served eight years in U.S. Navy, followed by nearly 40 year working at TVA, starting at Muscle Shoals, Ala., then to New Johnsonville, Tenn., steam plant; Paradise in Kentucky; Bull Run Steam plant in Oak Ridge and the Missionary Ridge building in downtown Chattanooga. A graveside service will be held at 10 am, Friday, April 4, 2014, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
