Evelyn Mitchell

Evelyn Cordelia Turner Mitchell, 97, passed on to her Eternal Home on Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, just 20 days before her 98th birthday. Mrs. Mitchell was born Sept. 4, 1916, in Chattanooga to the late Mark and Francis Turner, and was a member of the Greatest Generation, having been shaped by the Great Depression and World War II. She and husband, Everett, were separated several years by the war, but she was a strong supporter of the cause and shared her time by packing rations for the soldiers at Patton Foods in Chattanooga. She was a longtime member of the Clifton Hills United Methodist Church and later, Simpson United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of 63 years, Everett B. Mitchell Sr., brothers and sisters, two nephews and one niece. Left to cherish her memory are her son and daughter-in-law, Everett B. (Cindy)Mitchell Jr. "Ron"; daughters and sons-in-law, Lyn (Kelly) Mitchell Gilbert, and Sara (Jerry) Mitchell DeBerry; grandchildren, Paul Gilbert, Carla Gilbert Norris, Jerry DeBerry Jr., and Sheri DeBerry Hicks; several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, in the South Crest Chapel with her grandson, Rev. Paul Gilbert, officiating. Burial will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
