Robert Salyer

Robert Mungle Salyer, of Lookout Mountain, Ga., passed away at his home the afternoon of Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, with the snow softly falling. Bob was born on July 22, 1915, to William Carson Salyer and Nell Ross Snodgrass Salyer. He moved to Knoxville, as a child attending school and graduating from Knoxville High School. He continued friendships on the campus of the University of Tennessee with many who remained lifelong friends. He served in WWII with the United States Army as a training specialist at Fort Hood, Texas. In 1943 he married Jeanne Eakin, of Petersburg, Tenn., whom he had met on the campus of The University of Tennessee. Following the end of WWII, they relocated to Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain. He began his long career as a representative and supplier of material handling equipment representing Eaton Yale & Towne and Clark Equipment. He was a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club, The Lookout Mountain Fairyland Club, The YMCA of Downtown Chattanooga and the Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon. He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Mary Nell Salyer Adcock, of Knoxville; and his beloved grandson, Andrew Eakin Moore. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Eakin Salyer; his son, Robert David Salyer, of Nashville and Leipers Fork, Tenn.; his daughter, Joan Salyer Moore, of Lookout Mountain, Tenn.; his grandson, Guy Ford Willingham Jr., of Memphis; great-granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Willingham, of Memphis, and Chapel Hill, N.C.; his granddaughter, Mary Emily Moore, of Roanoke, Va.; great-granddaughters, Mary Mackenzie Brooks and Isabelle Katherine Brooks, of Roanoke, Va.; great-grandson, Benjamin Thomas Moore, of Lookout Mountain, Tenn.; nephew, James D. Adcock and family, of Knoxville. He had a wonderful life of travels with his wife, family and friends. He loved books, music and the beauty of the mountains and the beach. He loved his family with all his heart and they him. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Forest Hills Cemetery with Rev. Joseph Novenson of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church officiating. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, 316 North Bragg Ave., Lookout Mountain, TN 37350 or the charity of choice.
