Doris Howell

Doris S. Howell, 90, of Collegedale, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at a nursing care facility. Doris was born June 10, 1923, in Knox County, Tenn., to George D. and Hallie R. Sproule. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; second husband, Walter Howell; first husband, J. Lincoln Shoemaker; sister, Evelyn Self; brothers, George D. Sproule Jr. and William "Bud" Sproule. Doris graduated from McMinn High and attended Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens. During WW II years, she taught grades 1-8 in Citico, Tenn. Upon returning to Athens, she was employed as cafeteria manager at City Park School followed by employment with the McMinn County Welfare Department. After moving to Collegedale in 1959, Doris worked for McKee Bakery as production manager and later in accounts payable until retirement. For over 40 years, she was an active member of Collegedale Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Doris is survived by one son, Ron (Carol) Shoemaker, Ringgold, Ga.; grandsons, Bryan Shoemaker, Ooltewah; Matthew (Tammie) Shoemaker, Ringgold, Ga.; Paul Shoemaker, Atlanta; great-grandson, Hunter Shoemaker; great-granddaughter, Emma Kate Shoemaker; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today in the Valley View Chapel. Interment will be in Collegedale Memorial Park. Please share your memories at ChattanoogaValleyViewChapel.com.
