George Smith

George Rhea Smith, 77, resident of Red Bank, went home to be with his Heavenly Father Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014. He was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Army. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be desperately missed. He loved volunteering, for 19 years, at Summit View Assisted Living for their Wednesday prayer meeting. His love and compassion for people lived in his heart throughout his lifetime including the Tennessee Baptist Childrens Home which held a very special place in his heart. He was an avid lover of Dixie Youth baseball, always involved with his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Preston B. and Mary Sue Smith. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Beverly C. Smith; daughters, Jennifer (Lawrence) Edwards and Beth (Tyrone) Byrd, both of Chattanooga; son, Byron (Heather) Smith of Hoover, AL,; grandchildren: Ryan Edwards, Christian Byrd, Madison Byrd, Hamilton Byrd, Preston and Nick Smith of Hoover, Ala.; and a great-grandchild, Bentley Edwards; a sister, Marilyn (Ronald) Shumak,e of Manchester, Tenn.; niece, Karen (Jim) Celsor, of Hartsville, Tenn.; and two nephews, Bob (Kristy) Shumake, of Martin, Tenn., and Ken (Vikki) Shumake, of Chattanooga. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hearth Hospice, 1800 Rossville Ave., Suite 7, Chattanooga, TN 37408. A special thanks to his nurse, Lora Baker; Missy Day and Cherrish Reed for their excellent care. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Monday at Lane Funeral Home, Ashland Terrace with Rev. Bert Jones, Rev .
