Gloria Montgomery

Gloria Johnson Montgomery, 77, of Signal Mountain, went to be with Jesus Christ on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, surrounded by her family and friends. She was a longtime resident of Signal Mountain. Gloria was born in Quincy, Fla., on Oct. 27, 1936. She was a graduate of Leon High School in 1954 where she was a cheer leader and May Queen. She was also a graduate of Florida State University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi. After graduation, she married Jack Montgomery. They began their life together in Florida and then moved to Tennessee. Her affiliations included PEO, the Junior League of Tallahassee and the original Board of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga. Gloria was a very active member of Signal Crest United Methodist Church where she had been a director of Childrens Ministries. She had also been employed as an elementary teacher in both Florida and Tennessee. Gloria was always active in her childrens activities including their schools and youth groups. She was a wonderful encourager and comforter and a marvelous friend to many. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney Tyler and Evelyn Rudd Johnson. Gloria is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Jack Montgomery; children, Mary Evelyn Montgomery, New York City and Rudd Montgomery and his wife, Rebekah, of Signal Mountain; her cherished grandchildren, William Tyler and Louisa Rose Montgomery; brother, Sid Tyler Johnson Jr. and his wife, Jenny, of Wyoming and their daughter Jessi. Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, at Alexian Village in the Gold Room. A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2014, at Signal Crest United Methodist Church, 1005 Ridgeway Ave., Signal Mountain, with Rev. Jim Whedbee officiating. Visitation will follow in the Crest Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 1201 E.
