Ruby Howard

Ruby Scott Lee Porter Howard, of Rome, Ga., passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2014. He was 97 years old. Ruby was born Nov. 25, 1916, in Ooltewah. A former longtime resident of Chattanooga, she moved eight years ago to Rome, Ga., to be close to her daughter. After living in many places, Ruby and her family settled back in Chattanooga and raised a family there. She was a long time member of Concord Baptist Church, then Silverdale Cumberland Presbyterian Church. When she moved to Rome, she joined First Christian Church/Disciples of Christ and although she was unable to attend services, the Ministers visited and held Communion with her at her retirement home. Ruby was a member of the Sunnyside Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Asebi Court of the Lady Shriners. She spent many years volunteering for the Shrine Hospitals and doing other charitable works with these groups. She loved square dancing and as long as she was able, she danced three or four nights a week. She was a charter member of Allamande Hall in Chattanooga. When she moved to Rome, she became an active part of Horizon Bay Vibrant Retirement Center's activities--never missing Friday night bingo, craft sessions and any party the center hosted. She enjoyed the bus rides to various destinations and could always be counted on to liven up a gathering. The family wishes to thank all her caregivers at Horizon Bay. She loved them all and they loved her. Ruby was preceded by her husband and father of her children, Charles T. Scott Sr.; her husbands, Bob Lee and Gil Howard. Also preceding her were her older son, Charles T. Scott Jr.; and her great-granddaughter, "Princess" Molly Stubblefield. Surviving are her daughter, Barbara Scott "Scottie" Bates, Rome; former son-in-law, Wain Bates, Rome: son, Robert (Tina) Scott, Florida; stepson, Randy (Deborah) Howard, Ooltewah: and daughter-in-law, Sharon Strikland, Dallas, Ga.; grandchildren, Pamela Sue Smith, Florida: Eddie Scott (Tammi), Decatur, Tenn., Jenny R.
