Wayne Berry

Wayne M. Berry, of Hixson, passed away on Monday, March 10, 2014. He was 73 years old. Wayne was born in Youngstown, Ohio, to the late John Joseph and Verna Helen Martin Berry. He served our country during the Vietnam War in the United States Navy. Wayne was trained in the U.S. Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit in Schenectady, N.Y., and later served in Beach Jumper Unite One, Nab, San Diego, Calif. He served in the Naval Reactor Division on the USS Longbeach, the first above water nuclear ship. He received his bachelor of science, nuclear engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1974. Wayne was employed with Stone and Webster Engineering Corp. in Boston, were he acted as principal instrument application engineer on the Millstone Unit 3 project. Wayne then went to work at TVA, on the Clinch River Breeder Reactor Project where he was the control engineer for the design of the most advanced nuclear power plant ever approved for construction by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He then moved to Chattanooga and worked for TVA as secretary of the Nuclear Safety Review Board instrumentation and control expert over Watts Bar and Sequoyah Nuclear Power Plants. Wayne served as chairman of the committee overseeing the quality of safety evaluations. He later worked at Watts Bar Unit II where he redesigned the main and auxiliary control room panels to incorporate NRC approved layout and state of the art digital components. Wayne was a member of St. John United Methodist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Chatter Masters Chapter of the Toastmasters International. Waynes passion was classical music, where he loved to play the trombone. He was an active member of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Guild and the Performing Arts League of Chattanooga. He was a member of the Chadek Orchestra and the Chattanooga Spectrum Big Band. Wayne is survived by his wife of 22 years, Andrea Ingle Berry; daughters, Anneliese Berry Bowman and JJ Berry Carico; grandson, Aizen Carico; daughter, DiAnne Adams Shirley; son, Thomas (Lee Ann) Adams; grandchildren, Kelsi Shirley, Thomas Hunter Adams and James Dugan Adams; brother, Ed Berry; nieces, Tracey Newell and Corey Berry and many other nieces and nephews. Wayne was a loving husband, father and devoted grandfather who adored his grandchildren and loved to take them on many outings and train rides. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today, March 12, and from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Funeral services for Wayne will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home chapel with Pastor Ken LaDuke officiating. Burial will follow in National Cemetery with military honors. The fellow associates at Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Unit 2 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
