Howard German

Howard Edward German, 78, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at a local hospital surrounded by his family. He was born May 9, 1935, in Copperhill, Tenn., to the late Harold and Ilene German and spent most of his life in the Chattanooga area. Howard graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1955. He was on the City boxing team and lettered in that sport. He then joined the United States Marine Corp where he spent three years as M.P. at Camp Lejeune, N.C. After being discharged he attended Chattanooga State in their drafting department. He was employed by Velsicol Chemical Co. for 31 years. Howard was an active member of the Lions Club for 45 years and volunteered with Hospice for six years. He was a member of Scott Memorial Church of God. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, and was so dearly loved by his family. Howard was preceded in death by his brother, Fred W. German; and his brother-in-law, Leonard R. Tanner Jr. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara R. German; sons, Steven Kile German, of Rossville, and Edward Franklin (Lori) German, of Newnan, Ga.; two grandchildren, Tiffany and Haley, of Newnan, Ga.; sisters, Betsy Tanner and Judy (Jerrel) Davis; sister-in-law, Pat German; and many loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Scott Memorial Church of God, 1665 Waterhouse St., East Ridge, TN 37412, or to your favorite charity. Condolences may be sent to www.lane-southcrestchapel.com. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the South Crest Chapel with Reverend Danny Pinter officiating. Interment will follow in Chattanooga Memorial Park with military honors. Robert L. Dixon, Kenneth E. Dixon, Gerald E. Davis, William R. Davis, Sam C. Dixon, and Josh A. Davis will serve as pallbearers. The Rossville Lions Club will serve as Honorary Pallbearers. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service today at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home and Crematory, located at the end of Historic Missionary Ridge, Rossville.
