Sonida Nichols

Sonida Wesley Nichols, 59, formerly of Chattanooga, died on Saturday, March 15, 2014, in Birmingham, Ala., at a hospital. Sonida was a 1974 graduate of Riverside High School, where she loved play the clarinet in The Marching Trojan Band. She also attended Edmondson, Junior College. She worked at DuPont and Vincent Printing Co. She was a member of Olivet Baptist Church while living in Chattanooga. She enjoyed cooking and traveling the country. She was preceded in death by grandmothers, Ella Mae Greer and Annie Haley; uncles, Alexander and Jimmy Griffin. Sonida is survived by her son, Steven Ashley, of Dallas, Texas; granddaughter, Breanna Ashley, of Dallas, Texas; mother, Virginia Lett, of Birmingham, Ala.; father, James Wesley, of Chicago, Ill.; sister, Carol W. Griffin, of Fort Worth, Texas; brother, Alexander Brown, of Birmingham, Ala.; nieces, LaShanda Smith, of Keller, Texas; Niketa Johnson, of Atlanta; nephews, Montego, Montero and Joshua Brown, all of Birmingham, Ala. Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, March 22, 2014, in the chapel with the Rev. Kenyata Smiley officiating. Interment in Highland Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held on the same day from 9 a.m. until time of services. Arrangements by John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
