Lillian Lewis

Lillian Lewis passed away in Chattanooga in her home at assisted living on Tuesday, April 29, 2014. She was born May 21, 1916 in Jasper, Tenn., to John Mitchell and Ida Mae Hickman Lewis, a pioneer family of Sequatchie Valley, Tenn. Lillian was a graduate of Marion County High School and Tennessee Technological University and was a school teacher in Marion County for over 40 years having spent most of her years teaching business at South Pittsburg High School. She passed along her love of knowledge and love of life to her students to make sure they would be most successful in life. She loved all and kept up with them throughout their years. When teaching, she kept notebooks next to her phone so that she could be ready to help when they called. Her students were her life and they remembered her through the years with thanks and kind words. She was a valuable and faithful member of the McKendree United Methodist Church for many years where she served on most committees and was willing to help in any way. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; young brother, John Odell Lewis; and young sister, Wanetta Lewis. She is survived by many cousins and friends who supported her with much love and kindness as she was always ready to help them. The family appreciates and thanks all the staff at Manorhouse Assisted Living, Hospice of Chattanooga, and Tate Funeral Home for their excellent care. The service will be held at 11 a.m. CDT Thursday, May 1, 2014, at the McKendree United Methodist Church with the Pastor Ron Ramsey followed by burial at the Lasater Cemetery. Honorary pall bearers will be her former students. Donations may be made to the Lasater Cemetery or the McKendree United Methodist Church in care of Tate Funeral Home, 950 Mel Dixon Lane, Jasper, TN 37347.
