Walter Smith

Walter James Smith, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, with his wife and children by his side. Walter was born in Stevenson, Ala., on March 26, 1930, the eldest son of the late Joe and Ruby Smith. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Susan Elaine Smith; and brother, Howard Smith. Walter moved his young family to Chattanooga in 1953 and began working at Dixie Yarns. He retired in 1995 with 42 years of service to the company. He was a member of Edgefield Community Church and the Red Bank Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Hazel Curtis Smith; son, Kenneth (Donna) Smith; daughter, Linda (Bob) Corder. He is also survived by sisters, Clara Kirk, of Bridgeport, Ala., and Mary Lou (Donald) Dupree; brother, Lee (Lois) Smith, all of Chattanooga. Other survivors include his brothers and sisters by marriage, Dan, Tommy, Mary, Louise, Shirley, and Helen, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Also left to cherish Walters memory are the joy of his later years, his most precious "younguns", granddaughter, Michelle Corder; grandsons, Chris (Angelique) Corder, Chad (Leigh) Smith, Jeremy (Mandi) Smith; and his seven great-grandchildren, Sarah, Kaitlyn, and Zachary Corder, Trista, Peyton, Hayden and Chase Smith. A service to commemorate his life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2014, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. David Rapson officiating. A graveside service will follow at 4 p.m. EDT on Friday at Price Cemetery, Hollywood, Ala. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
