Dorothy Brown

Dorothy Hollis Brown passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014. She was born April 20, 1921 to James Sydney Hollis and Neva Thrasher Hollis. She grew up in Attalla County, Miss., where her family originally settled in the 1830s. After graduating as salutatorian of her high school class in 1939, she attended Massey Business College in Birmingham. She was employed as one of only three women in the District Engineering Department of AT&T before marrying Quentin Quarles Brown in 1945. During their sixty years of marriage, the Browns lived in four southeastern states, moving to Galleria Woods Retirement Community in Birmingham after 38 years in Chattanooga. Active in the Methodist church, Mrs. Brown belonged to First-Centenary United Methodist in Chattanooga before joining Riverchase Methodist. During her life as a wife and mother, she volunteered extensively with Chattanooga Public Library and Meals on Wheels in Chattanooga, and American Red Cross in Birmingham. Mrs. Brown was predeceased by a brother, James Sydney Hollis, and is survived by a sister, Betty Sue (Mrs. Harry) Moore, of Cherokee Village, Ark.; two sons, Quentin Quarles Brown Jr., of Birmingham and George Hollis Brown, of Tuscaloosa, and a number of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2-3:30 p.m. today, May 7, at Ridouts Elmwood Chapel followed by a graveside service at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made to First-Centenary United Methodist Church, 419 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37402.
