Famously chained

Wednesday, Memorial Auditorium will host Alice in Chains, one of the foremost bands from the Seattle scene that brought grunge rock into the mainstream in the early '90s. As of press time, tickets were still available. To help kill time between now and when opening act Shooter Jennings strikes the first chords, here are some other figures who were famously chained up.

* Kratos: The star of the "God of War" video games isn't imprisoned, per se, but the wicked chained blades he uses in combat were grafted to his skin by the Grecian gods.

* Fortunato: This unassuming noble in Edgar Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amantillado" runs afoul of a vengeful gentleman who gets him drunk and then chains him to the wall of a chamber he then encloses with bricks.

* Jacob Marley: The first ghost to visit Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" is his former business partner, who appears as a ghost draped in chains.

* Prometheus: The mythological Greek titan who gave the gift of fire to humanity was rewarded for his efforts by being chained to a rock where an eagle ate out his liver, which magically regrew every night.

* Princess Leia Organa: In a scene from "Return of the Jedi" that every male "Star Wars" fan remembers fondly, Carrie Fisher is chained up by Jabba the Hutt while wearing a metal bikini.
