ROSWELL, Ga. - Alabama senior Brooke Pancake from Chattanooga and Baylor School and just-graduated University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Emma de Groot qualified Tuesday for the 2011 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, and GPS graduate Mary Alice Murphy got the second alternate spot with a 76 at Ansley Golf Club-Settindown Creek. Pancake tied for fifth with a 74 and de Groot shot 75 and birdied the first hole of a three-way playoff to join Mocs teammate Christine Wolf in the Aug. 8-14 tournament at the Rhode Island Country Club. Wolf was in by having qualified for the U.S. Women's Open. UTC's Jordan Britt and Middle Tennessee State freshman Haley Cothran from Soddy-Daisy shot 79 and 82 in the qualifier.
* The Chattanooga area will be well represented in the Tennessee Women's Open beginning Thursday at Stonehenge Golf Club at Fairfield Glade. Pancake, Murphy and Britt are entered in the three-day tournament along with fellow area golfers Debbie Durham, Morgan Hale, Rachel Ingram, Patricia Masick, Linda Mullins, Jean Roise, Maggie Scott and Kayla Stewart.
* OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. -- Cleveland resident Avery George improved her first-day score by seven strokes with a 78 Tuesday in the U.S. Girls' Junior Amateur Championship. She moved up into a tie for 128th but missed the cut at 154 by nine shots.
* Nashville golf professionals Johan Kok and Chase Brannon made three eagles Tuesday, including one by Kok on the final hole at Chattanooga's Black Creek Club, to repeat as the Tennessee PGA E-Z-GO Pro-Pro champions and split $4,000. They shot 20-under-par 124 for two days. Audie Johnson of Lebanon and Loren Personett of Antioch were second at 125, earning $2,500. Chattanooga's Keith Burdette and Crossville's Greg Wyatt were fourth at 129, good for $1,800, and former Cleveland resident Nick Bailes and John Bridgeman of Brentwood tied for sixth at 131 along with Chattanooga's Bruce Bowen and Knoxville's Walt Chapman. Chattanooga's Matthew and Mitch Brock tied for 14th at 134. Crossville's Warren Huddleston and Jeff Houston won the B Division with a 68 Tuesday, and Lookout Mountain's Adam Campbell and Cohutta's Chris Owens were second at 69.
* VILLA RICA, Ga. -- Recent Heritage High School graduate Hunter Cornelius and Lee University junior Tyler Smith from Douglasville qualified Tuesday at The Frog Golf Club for the Georgia Open tournament July 28-31 at the Barnsley Gardens Resort near Adairsville. Cornelius, who is headed to College of Coastal Georgia, a new school in Lee's conference, shared first place with his 3-under-par 69, and Smith tied for fourth with a 70. Cornelius had five consecutive birdies on the front nine Tuesday (Nos. 2-6)).
* Brooks Thomas and Blakesly Warren won the City Junior golf tournament Tuesday at Champions Club at Hampton Creek with matching 140s for two days. Thomas won by five strokes over Levi Nix in the Boys 16-18 division, while Warren's 68 Tuesday gave her a four-shot edge over Emily Javadi in Girls 15-18. Chase Cole in Boys 14-15, Sport Allmond in Boys 12-13 and Natalie Javadi in Girls 12-14 were the other age group winners.

* The Baylor School girls' team officially has been declared the 2011 national dual meet champions among independent schools by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association. The national rankings are determined by submissions of each team's top three times in every individual and relay event, and the Baylor girls' score of 6,346 is the highest in school history and the third highest in national history. The Bolles School of Jacksonville, Fla., was second at 6,162. Baylor's girls also won the national title in 2009 (with 6,289 points) and were runners-up last year, after being 13th in 2007 and fifth in 2008. "This team had as remarkable a season as any I have ever been associated with in my over 20 years of coaching," Baylor coach Dan Flack said in a school release. "Unlike the Swimming World national championship that can be won based on the performances of a few members, this award is completely about depth. We had contributions from all classes, and we were able to win because all of our girls really stepped up at some point in the year and gave a great effort for the team."
