Martha's Trouble, a folk/rock duo out of Auburn, Ala., will perform tonight at Charles & Myrtle's Coffeehouse.
The band consists of Rob and Jen Slocumb, who met 15 years ago inside a Houston coffee shop. A bond over music eventually led to marriage. They continued to write and play music, building enough of a repertoire to start producing albums and tour the world.
"I think about the years we spent living in a van, traveling across the country, and it's hard to believe we did that," Jen says in their press material. "Now we have two children, a mortgage, bills, a dog ... things that wouldn't fit in the van. But those times help us remember what Martha's Trouble means."
The band's name comes from the biblical story of sisters Mary and Martha when Jesus visits. Martha busies herself around the house, while Mary sits at his feet. The story says Martha was troubled because Mary wasn't helping. This is the duo's reminder, they say, to stop and smell the roses and to keep an eye on the bigger picture and the important things in life.
The two are touring in support of their newest CD, "Anchor Tattoo." The album, their 10th, is based on life experiences.
"The songs are all personal in some way and are things that we all go through in life," Jen said. "Our fans can expect a very fresh, honest, uplifting album. It's very true to ourselves."
