Meacham Writer's Workshop is like a buffet for local readers and writers because it allows people to pick and choose what they want to attend, according to Meacham Assistant Director Sybil Baker.

The biannual workshop this fall from Oct. 27-29 is a free program that brings globally, nationally and locally acclaimed authors to Chattanooga for three days of readings, workshops and informal gatherings, said Baker. This year's workshop will feature New York Times best-selling author Kevin Wilson in addition to a variety of other critically acclaimed writers.
Meacham is made possible primarily through an endowment funded by the late Jane Meacham in memorial of her husband Ellis K. Meacham, with the stipulation that it remain free, informal and open to the public, said Baker.
"We try to encourage a more informal atmosphere," she said. "We encourage opportunities for people to interact and meet with writers on a more personal level."
Wilson, who will be returning to the Meacham Writer's Workshop for a second time, said his first experience was amazing and that he is particularly looking forward to catching up with UTC faculty, students and friends he met through the workshop.
"I love the fact that the conference encourages interaction with writers beyond just the readings and signings," said Wilson. "It's nice to have a few days where you're surrounded by people who love literature and you have multiple opportunities to meet these people and get to know them beyond just pleasantries and small talk."
In addition to the public readings, Wilson and the other visiting authors will meet with local writers to conduct workshops and individual conferences to critique previously submitted work. The submission deadline for this fall's conference has already passed, but those who missed the opportunity are encouraged to submit to the conference this spring, said Baker.
Meacham Writer's Workshop was recently listed in Writer's Digest as one of the top 10 affordable writing conferences in the nation, she said.
