Tennessee Promise has generated twice the interest Gov. Bill Haslam expected, and now he's calling on volunteers to serve as mentors for the program.
The newly launched program to offer Tennessee high school seniors a free two-year degree has been applied for by 47,000 students. And according to Haslam, there will be a mentor for every five of those accepted.
Haslam spoke today at the Chattanooga Urban League's annual Equal Opportunity Day breakfast, and called on Chattanoogans to become mentors in the program.
