Chattanooga jobless rate drops to 5-year low

Unemployment in metropolitan Chattanooga fell last month to the lowest monthly level since December 2009.

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development said today that Chattanooga's jobless rate during March declined four tenths of a percent to 5.6 percent - the lowest metro rate since May 2008.

Chattanooga's non-seasonally adjusted jobless rate matched the U.S. rate in March.

Hamilton County's jobless rate fell by half a percent to 5.4 percent, while unemployment declined by four tenths of a percent in the rest of the Tennessee portion of metro Chattanooga, declining to 6.9 percent in Marion County and 6.5 percent in Sequatchie County.

Among Tennessee's major metro areas, unemployment was lowest in Nashville at 4.7 percent and highest in Memphis at 6.5 percent.
