Baylor boys, Meigs girls finish third in Best of Preps

Baylor took control in the fourth quarter and won the third-place boys' game 50-43 over Tyner in the Best of Preps tournament Tuesday at Chattanooga State.

Meigs County dominated from the start in beating GPS 54-28 for third in the girls' division.

The boys' game was back and forward through each of the first three quarters, and Tyner was ahead by one point going into the fourth, but the Red Raiders outscored the Rams 13-5 in the final period.

"I thought we stayed engaged in all four quarters," Baylor coach Austin Clark said. "Tyner has a really nice basketball team, and I thought we played defense pretty well. The defensive pressure that they put on us in man-to-man is very similar to what we play in our league. I was very proud of the team in a tough game against a good team."

Gage Upshaw and Jaylon Baker scored 10 points apiece in leading the Red Raiders.

All four of Tyner's free throws were made by junior guard Kevin Cameron, who also made five 3-point baskets and totaled 21 points. Jeremy Elston added 12.

"The team got me the ball when I was hot," Cameron said. "We have been doing a lot of conditioning, learning plays, going over plays and getting a lot of shots. This is going to help us a lot because we played different and better competition than we did in the first half of the season."

Meigs County girls' coach Jason Powell called his Lady Tigers' victory a "workmanlike performance." They outscored the Bruisers 29-9 in the first half.

"We pulled ourselves together and got off to a great start," Powell said. "We set the tone, dug in and defended well. Once we got up by 20, we could afford to be patient and get the shots we needed."

Taylor Boggess scored 22 points with three 3s for Meigs.

"Our performance in this tournament really gets me excited, because our district is pretty good," she said. "We just want to go far in our district and return to sub-state like we did last year.

"Overall I was pleased by how the team played," Boggess added. "We played good team ball: We had a lot of good passes and layups."

East Hamilton 58, Ooltewah 56

A dominant performance from Ooltewah's Jordan Rawls was not enough to defeat the Hurricanes in the boys' fifth-place game.

Rawls scored 29 points with all six of the Owls' 3-pointers.

Every quarter was close, but the quarter that told the difference was the second, when East Hamilton outscored Ooltewah by six points.

Justin Dozier had 19 points and Noah Fager added 11 for the Hurricanes.

Soddy-Daisy girls 52, Tyner 43

Soddy-Daisy outscored the Lady Rams by seven in the final quarter to earn the fifth-place victory. The game was tied at 35 going into the fourth period.

Alexis Trimiar and Morgan Hopkins scored 20 and 19 points to lead the Lady Trojans. Keniah Watkins led the Lady Rams with 12.

Arts & Sciences 79, Marion County 52

A 30-point game from Marion County's Matt Harveston was one to remember, but the Patriots had more overall firepower and won the boys' seventh-place game handily.

The Patriots came out full of energy, scoring 24 points in the first quarter and holding Marion to 9. CSAS continued to pull away, led by Shunn Moorer and Todd Lansden with 16 points each and Kobe Clark with 11.

Central girls 48, Notre Dame 41

Brianna Denton and Darian Hixson combined for 30 points in leading the Lady Purple Pounders to victory in the seventh-place game. Denton had 17 of those.

Notre Dame led by four after the first quarter but Central gained momentum and tied the game going into halftime. A 10-4 run in the third quarter put the Lady Pounders ahead to stay.

Meme Siler and Annie Ripper led the Lady Irish with 11 and 10 points.
