Man whose crime inspired 'Blind Faith' book, film dies at 75

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey man whose plot to hire a hit man to kill his wife became the inspiration for the book "Blind Faith" and a TV movie has died. Robert O. Marshall was 75.

New Jersey's Department of Corrections says Marshall died Saturday at South Woods State Prison.

Marshall was convicted in 1986 of arranging the murder of his wife, Maria, and sentenced to death. She was found shot to death in a picnic area along the Garden State Parkway as the couple returned from Atlantic City.

Prosecutors contended Marshall had his wife killed so he could collect a $1.5 million life insurance policy.

Marshall's death sentence was overturned in 2004. The state later abolished the death penalty.

He was to have appeared at a parole hearing next month.
