Golf Mocs 13th in Auburn event and more Chattanooga region sports news

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team is 13th out of 16 teams heading into the final round of Auburn's Tiger Invitational at Opelika, Ala. The Mocs shot a 299 on Monday, five strokes better than Sunday, but slipped behind Memphis and Mississippi State on the Grand National Lakes Course. UTC's Ewan Scott shot a 72 and is tied for 19th at 145, while Kory Webb improved four strokes with a 73 and is tied for 38th. Andrew Weathers shares 53rd place after his second 76, and Brooks Thomas is tied for 65th at 155, playing as an individual.

* The Lee University men's golf team is tied for fourth place after 36 holes of the Grover Page Classic that includes eight NCAA Division I teams at the Jackson (Tenn.) Country Club. The Flames are at 580, only four strokes behind co-leaders UT-Martin and Tennessee Tech, with Eastern Kentucky at 579. Murray State and Southern Illinois are tied with Division II member Lee in the 12-team field. Lee's Peyton Sliger and Tyler Davis are tied for eighth and 10th individually at 143 (71-72) and 144 (71-73), and Shea Sylvester is 13th at 145 with Mark Strube at 146.

* First-round leader Dalton State is second to defending NAIA national champion Coastal Georgia with one round to go in the nine-team Sand Shark Classic men's golf tournament at Okatie, S.C. Coastal Georgia is at 571; the Roadrunners are at 578 with Sean Elliott tied for second individually at 141, Levi Nix sixth at 143, Maximillan Bruck tied for 13th at 147 and Chase Jones and Anthony D'Angelo at 149 and 151. Coastal Georgia's Alastair Tidcombe leads by six strokes at 9 under par, and the Mariners' Hunter Cornelius from Heritage High School is tied for ninth at 145.

Baseball

* The Cleveland State TCCAA baseball series at Jackson State was pushed back to Sunday and Monday and then Sunday's doubleheader was rained out and delayed until Monday, when the visiting Cougars lost 13-11 and 9-4. Their home game scheduled for today against Georgia Perimeter has been moved to Wednesday at 1 p.m. Jammer Strickland, Caleb Longley and Chris Caffrey each had two hits with a double and three RBIs in Monday's first game, Longley and Caffrey also hitting home runs, and Clay Hetland was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Hetland was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Janson Roberson was 2-for-3 with two runs in the second game for Cleveland State (8-6), while Longley homered and singled.

* Tennessee Wesleyan's baseball team won 9-3 against Ave Maria and 9-2 over Northwood in games Monday in Florida, and Bryan College defeated Roosevelt University 7-3 at home in Dayton. Wardy Polanco was 4-for-5 with a home run, Ridge Hoopi-Haslam was 3-for-4 and scored three times and Shell McClain also homered for TWC (15-5) against Ave Maria. McClain and Hoopi-Haslam each was 3-for-5 with a double against Northwood, McClain also with a triple, while Cody Hiefnar was 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs. Bryan is 17-6 after losing 1-0 in 10 innings, losing 7-5 and winning 3-1 in its initial Appalachian Athletic Conference series this past weekend at Point University. Kenny Knudsen pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the win at Point, when Langston Calhoun was 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs scored.

* Covenant College postponed today's scheduled home baseball doubleheader against William Peace. The Scots next hope to play Friday and Saturday at Birmingham-Southern.

Softball

* The Chattanooga State softball team totaled 35 hits, five home runs and 12 doubles in 11 innings Monday with 14-6 and 14-1 victories at Snead State. Sharlene Godoy struck out 11 Lady Parsons in five innings for the Lady Tigers (16-6) in the first game, when Izzy McCurry was 2-for-2 with a home run, a double and three RBIs, Shannon Plese was 3-for-4 with a homer and three runs scored, Lindsey Stickrod was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, Sydney Spurgeon was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and an RBI, Katie Scott was 2-for-4 with a homer and Dana Horgan had a three-run blast. Hanna Manley pitched a five-inning one-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the rematch, and Courtney Crawford was 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run and Horgan, Scott and McCurry each was 3-for-4. Horgan homered, doubled, batted in three runs and scored two, while Scott matched those numbers except for the homer and McCurry doubled, scored twice and drove in a run.

Volleyball

* Soddy-Daisy High School senior Karigan Fulghum has signed to continue her volleyball career at Bryan College in Dayton. "Karigan has spent most of her career as an outside hitter and OPP but has also trained as a setter in order to become a more versatile player and help her team where needed," said her former Soddy-Daisy coach, Lorri Johnson, noting that Fulghum had several offers. "Karigan has the skill and work ethic that will carry her through life, and I am extremely proud to have been her coach." Bryan's David Shumaker said Fulghum "is not only a great volleyball player, she also has a high level of volleyball intelligence."

Tennis

* Covenant College freshman Matthew Harvie was the USA South player and rookie of the week for men's tennis after helping the Scots take 9-0, 8-1 and 7-2 team wins. He won both his No. 1 singles matches and won at No. 1 doubles with Chris Cox in all three matches.

Lacrosse

* Mallory Grimm had six goals and two assists, Relly King had five goals and one assist and Sally Anne Greenwood added four goals as the Sewanee women's lacrosse team improved to 4-0 with a 22-16 home win Monday against Wooster. Katie Riddle had three goals and two assists for Sewanee.
