Soccer

* Mark Duble begins his 22nd season as Covenant College women's soccer coach today at 5 p.m. at home against Berry College, and he has eight returning starters and a total of eight seniors and six juniors returning from last year. The Lady Scots finished sixth in the USA South conference. "We have a lot of returning upperclassmen who are very experienced, so this could be a year for us to move up," Duble said in a school release Monday. Junior Anna Porch led the team with 12 goals and added four assists in 2014, and sophomore Christy Barton scored five goals. Allie Vannoy is another sophomore forward. Juniors Andrea Hunt, Kaitlyn Winking and Natalie Smith are together in the backfield for the third year, and "they are all big and strong," Duble said. "Andrea and Kaitlyn are two of the best defenders in the conference. Natalie has turned into a great player because teams try to avoid the other two." Senior Ruth Terry has moved from the midfield to the backfield, in front of a freshman goalkeeper, 5-foot-11 Rachel Lemay from Apopka, Fla. Seniors Jenna Vreeland, Anne Charlotte Strawbridge and Rachel Bernard head the midfield, where classmate Rachel Buys and junior Gabby Powell also should get playing time with freshmen Hannah King, Taylor Winking and Carter Steedley providing depth.
