"Really Rosie," the production closing the 32nd Youth Theatre season at Chattanooga Theatre Centre, will be memorable as a "delightfully silly" musical with a wholly impressive pedigree.
Maurice Sendak, author of the children's favorite "Where the Wild Things Are," wrote the book for the musical, and Carole King, the singer/songwriter responsible for such grown-up favorites as "You've Got a Friend" and "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman," did the music.
The story, based on preschool books, opens on a hot July Saturday with the kids from The Nutshell Library bored and needing something to do. Rosie, the sassiest kid on her block of Brooklyn's Avenue P, entertains the group and herself by acting out fantasies of being a Hollywood star. She decides her next project will be to produce an imaginary, Oscar-winning movie musical about her life and in particular the demise of her brother, named Chicken Soup, to be called "Did You Hear What Happened to Chicken Soup?"
Scott Dunlap is directing this MainStage production. Michael Huseman is musical director. Sharing the role of Rosie are Ava Culpepper from the Night Kitchen cast and Maggie Meller from the Wild Things cast.
On opening weekend, a reception will follow the 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday performances, April 29-30. The production continues in six additional performances through Sunday, May 8.
