Bryan, TWU win AAC volleyball openers and more regional sports news

The Bryan College volleyball team opened Appalachian Athletic Conference play with a 3-1 win Tuesday at Point University in West Point, Ga. The set scores were 25-23, 24-26, 25-22, 25-21. Paige Lawson and Rachel Mosley had 14 and 13 kills, Shelby Enochs had 12 kills and 29 assists and Kayla Rymer made 22 digs for the Lady Lions, who take a 3-2 overall record into the Southeastern Challenge this weekend at Union College in Barbourville, Ky.

* Sundara Chinn registered 17 kills and Sierra Ingraham added 13 kills with 14 digs and three aces as Tennessee Wesleyan got its first volleyball win of the season Tuesday, 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 14-25, 25-21) against AAC visitor Bluefield. Also for TWU (1-4), Tia Madden had 19 assists and 10 digs, Kailyn Lillie made 19 digs and Alexan Crittenden had 11 assists. For Bluefield, Ellen Johnson had 15 kills and Camry McCroskey 32 assists.

Baseball

* Former Calhoun (Ga.) High School baseball star Josh Smoker got his first major league pitching win Monday night when the New York Mets edged the Miami Marlins 2-1 in 10 innings. Smoker (1-0) pitched a perfect 10th with two strikeouts and got the win when Yoenis Cespedes homered with two outs in the bottom half.

Auto Racing

* The biggest crowd of the year at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip enjoyed great weather but was not fully satisfied Saturday night, as a minor accident and an oildown interrupted the racing and kept it from ending before the Catoosa County midnight curfew. There were 85 cars entered, including 30 old hot rods, 20 Super Pro contenders, 20 Foot Brake entries and 15 Junior Dragsters. Eva Lane, Cody Holloway, Eric Mann and Jake Clayton split the top Super Pro prize money, while Melvin Croft, Mark Busher, Bradley Smith and Curtis Snodgrass divided the top money in Foot Brake and Shelby Whittle, Joryn Wells and Eric Cutler divided the Junior Dragster winnings. The strip on Scruggs Road will host $2,000-to-win bracket races Friday and Saturday.

* As Rome (Ga.) Speedway celebrates its 50th anniversary Sunday night, the Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series will be in the spotlight on the track. The Chevrolet Performance 100 presented by Sunoco Race Fuels will be the first 100-lap race at the speedway in more than 15 years. Cars in the series, which will be at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Ga., on Saturday, all use the Chevrolet Performance CT 525 engine package. One of the drivers will be Chattanooga's Ronnie Johnson, the reigning series champion and the son of Joe Lee Johnson, who won the opening Late Model race at Rome Speedway. Ronnie Johnson is in a tight battle this year with leader Tyler Crowder of Tallahassee, Fla.; Jake Knowles of Rome; and Tim Busha of Boaz, Ala.

Soccer

* The Tennessee Wesleyan women's soccer team fell to 0-2 for the season with its second 2-1 loss, this one Tuesday at Cumberland University, ranked 25th in the NAIA. Wesleyan's score came on a 30-yard left-footed shot by Livia Walker in the 87th minute. Cumberland (2-0) scored in the 58th and 81st minutes.

* Freshman Santiago Moore converted a second-half pass from captain Jordan Man for the only goal of the match as Dalton State won its men's soccer season opener Tuesday at home against Florida Memorial.

* The newly formed Premier Soccer Academy under-11 boys' Lanus team won the age group's gold division in the Ocoee Cup tournament presented by Challenger this past weekend in Cleveland. Coached by Pedro Kozak, assisted by Ross Shumate, PSA Lanus won 4-3 over Camp Forest FC, 4-3 over Challenge FC North, 5-0 over Rocket City United's Gurley 06 and 4-1 over the Signal Mountain Storm. Camp Forest wound up the runner-up at 3-1.
