Gasoline prices last week rose another 3.6 cents per gallon in Chattanooga, but prices at the pump still remained 32.4 cents per gallon below the Memorial Day weekend of a year ago. Local prices at the pump also were the lowest for the start of any summer since 2005, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 170 gas outlets in Chattanooga.

The average retail gasoline price in Chattanooga at the start of this week was $2.14 per gallon, or 18 cents per gallon below the U.S. average of $2.32 a gallon. Fuel prices have jumped 70 cents a gallon from their February lows but remain well below the average price of $2.47 per gallon a year ago and the $3.42 per gallon average price of two years ago.

Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, said he expects gas prices to remain below $3 per gallon in most of the country through the rest of the summer.
