Around the Region: Volleyball Mocs fall 3-1 at Wofford

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team lost 3-1 in a Southern Conference match Friday at Wofford. The set scores were 25-16, 21-25, 25-16, 25-16. Kristy Wieser and Miranda Elpers led UTC (15-11, 8-5) in kills with seven each, while Lauren Greenspoon had 17 assists and Allie Davenport had 12 digs. Madison Bergren added 10 assists.

* Lee University beat visiting West Georgia 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-18) in Gulf South volleyball Friday, as Catherine Conley and Carly Callahan registered nine kills apiece and Brooke Wilsman had seven plus 13 digs. Blaire Beamer also had seven kills for Lee (13-13, 9-9), while Sadie Johnson and Kristi Farley had 19 and 17 assists and MaKayla Beebe and Johnson had 16 and 11 digs.

* Coastal Georgia's volleyball team improved to 23-7, 16-3 in the Southern States Athletic Conference, with a 3-0 win (25-19, 25-18, 25-22) over Dalton State (9-17, 8-11). Anna Metzler had 10 kills and Ryan Burke added seven in defeat, and Clarissa Weber and Brooke Thomas had 13 and 10 assists.

* Sewanee ended its volleyball regular season Friday with a 3-0 Southern Athletic Association loss (25-13, 25-11, 25-18) at Hendrix, which is 22-7. For the Tigers (9-17), Diamond Stewart and Rebecca Rowan had eight kills apiece and Caroline Owens had 14 digs.

Soccer

* The Lee women failed to reach the GSC soccer tournament final by falling 3-2 on penalty kicks after a 0-0 tie against Mississippi College on Friday at Pensacola, Fla. That left the Lady Flames 14-2-2.

* Dalton State's first-year women's soccer program reached the semifinals of the SSAC tournament with a 2-1 home win Friday against Bethel. The Roadrunners are 9-6-1.

* Sewanee lost 3-0 to Rhodes in an SAA women's tournament semifinal at Danville, Ky. The Tigers wound up 8-9-2.

Cross Country

* Dalton State sophomore Emily Poole repeated as the SSAC cross country individual women's champion and fellow Heritage High School graduate Ryan Gebelein led the DSC men with a third-place finish in the 8-kilometer race Friday morning at Grove Level North Park in Varnell, Ga. Gebelein, a freshman finishing in 26:53, will join Poole and Lady Roadrunners teammates Ana Karen Padilla and Natalie Hensley, who were seventh and eighth in the 5k, at the NAIA national meet Nov. 19 in Elsah, Ill. Poole's winning time as runner of the year was 18:24. With Nayeli Jacobo ninth and Gloria Pascual 11th, the Lady Roadrunners were a close second to Blue Mountain in the team standings, and Mallory Edwards was a sixth women's all-conference honoree from DSC. Padilla made the five-runner all-freshman team. The Roadrunners were third as a team, with David Murillo eighth, Saddoth Fraire 12th and Devin Swafford 18th as All-SSAC runners with Gebelein. He and Murillo were all-freshman honorees.

Basketball

* Dalton State began its basketball season Friday at Grayson, Ky., with an 85-71 victory over brand-new Forest Trails Sports University from Concord, N.C. Reed Dungan and Carnilious Simmons scored 19 points apiece, Simmons with 12 rebounds, and Isaiah Box had 15 points and nine assists for the Roadrunners. J'Quayveon Williams had 14 points and Sayvon Wilson grabbed nine rebounds.

* The Tennessee Wesleyan men's basketball team lost 82-56 to Southeastern in a game Friday at Union College and is 0-2, and the TWU women lost their season opener 80-61 at Indiana East. Savannah Atkins scored 15 points for the Lady Bulldogs, who got 11 from Madison Walkup and 10 apiece from Hunter Simpson and Gina Dick. Summer Morris had four steals and Lindsey Macon had five assists.

Golf

* Janelle Walker of Chattanooga was part of the winning foursome in the recent Augusta (Ga.) Country Club ladies' member-guest golf tournament. Walker, Sarah Harrover, Leigh Ann Chambley and JoAnnn Hatcher totaled 29 under par, the best score of all flights in the 56-player event.
