Around the Region: Wesley Cash reaches doubles final

Top-seeded Wesley Cash of Chattanooga and Mark Vines of Naples, Fla., will play today in the doubles final of the United States Tennis Association's National Men's 55 Clay Court Championships at The Landing Club in Savannah, Ga. They won 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals Wednesday against Bruce Levelle of Portland, Ore., and Brian Campbell of Washington, D.C. In the other semifinal, Stuart K. Saiki of Orlando, Fla., and Derek Segal of Weston, Fla., won 6-4, 6-1 against Eric D. Friedman of Gansevoort, N.Y., and Mats Ljungman of Ann Arbor, Mich.

* Chattanooga is hosting the USTA Southern Section Mixed Doubles Championships for 18-over and 40-over teams this weekend, and there is a need for more volunteers to help with the event. Opportunities exist for even just one or two hours of service Friday through Saturday at the Champions Club, Baylor School and McCallie School tennis complexes. Two Chattanooga teams are in the competition: Serena Lau's 40-over 7.0 team and Wes Miller's 18-over 8.0 group. In all there are 80 teams with about 750 players from nine states.

Soccer

* Bryan College played an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday at Union College in Barbourville, Ky., with Bryan winning 2-1 in the women's game and finishing the men's match in a scoreless tie. For the Bryan women (7-5, 3-1 AAC), Hana Mizoguchi and Keeley Holliday scored the goals to drop Union to 4-6 and 3-3. The Bryan men are now 9-0-2, 2-0-1, with the Union men now 10-2-1, 5-0-1.

* Lee University's women's soccer team will host its annual Kickin' it for Kids with Cancer event at 7 p.m. Friday at Lee's soccer field. The event will be part of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Spring Hill College, with the men's match at 5 p.m. and the women's match slated for 7. The game will benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer, which seeks to erase the effects of pediatric cancer and optimize each child's quality of life through essential specialized intervention beginning at the time of diagnoses and continuing throughout survivorship, according to a release from Lee. * Tennessee Tech sophomore Hollee Sadler from Manchester is the Ohio Valley Conference female golfer of the week after earning the medalist honor with a 54-hole 219 in the Starmount Forest Fall Classic in Greensboro, N.C. She won by three shots against 64 other players and led TTU to a 10-stroke team victory.
