North River Civic Center will start the new year with "Recent Works," an exhibit of work by Charlie and Iantha Newton, on Wednesday, Jan. 3. The center is located in Hixson at 1009 Executive Drive, Suite 102.

The show will run through March 31. It is sponsored by an Equity in the Arts grant from ArtsBuild.

The husband-and-wife working artists are co-founders of SPLASH, a free youth arts workshop, and donate their time to the artistic development of some of Chattanooga's low-income youth.

Iantha, originally from London, uses oils to describe images that emerge on the canvas as if by accident. These images, which range from landscapes to figures, are products of subconscious memory reflecting an ethereal quality of quiet and serenity. Her works include the representational and surreal.

Charlie is investigating the use of African-American themes as they relate to community issues. He intends to challenge the use of black in a contemporary manner leading toward his representation of a black aesthetic.

Exhibit hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays. No admission is charged to view the exhibit.
