Soccer

* The No. 2-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan women won their home semifinal Tuesday in the Appalachian Athletic Conference soccer tournament 4-0 over Milligan, but the top-seeded Bryan women and second-seeded Bryan men both lost to Truett McConnell - 1-0 and 2-1, respectively. Nicole Broderick scored in the 38th minute from a Chloe Rootes assist for Wesleyan's Lady Bulldogs (12-4-2), and Rootes, Lauren Cunningham and Karla Martinez added goals in the final 20 minutes. Emiley Saddler and Jessica Young double-assisted Rootes' score. In Dayton for fourth-seeded Truett McConnell (12-6-1), Katey Griggs scored in the 77th minute against Bryan's Lady Lions (12-6), who were outshot 16-7 but got nine saves from Morgana Hardt da Silva. The male Lions (14-6) scored just 1:35 into their afternoon match, Charlie Clarke converting a double assist from Kevin Roenpage and Brad Spooner, and had a 19-8 advantage in shots. But third-seeded TMU (15-3-2) scored at 15:02 and 49:10, and that latter goal held up as the game-winner. TMU keeper Evan Gaffney made eight saves. Wesleyan sophomore Young was the AAC women's defensive player of the week for her considerable part in holding Point to one shot on goal in a 3-0 quartefinal win last Friday. She marked Point's top goal scorer. TWU will host TMU in the women's tournament final this Friday.

Running

* After their top-25 finishes last Saturday in the NCAA Division II South Region cross country meet, three men and four women from Lee University made the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association all-region teams announced Monday. From the South champion Lee men were Harold Smith, who finished fifth; Christian Noble, seventh; and Ben Gilman, 17th. The second-place Lady Flames were represented by Emily Buwalda, fifth; Charlee Boxall, 11th; Becca Umbarger, 13th; and Audrey Smith, 25th.

* Madison Guider and Luis Perez from Cleveland State's first-year cross country program will represent the Lady Cougars and Cougars at the NJCAA meet Saturday at Fort Dodge, Iowa. Perez and Guider led their teams in every meet this season, including first-place individual finishes at the Central Georgia Tech Invitational. "This is very exciting to be able to go and participate in this meet," coach David Kyle said in a Cleveland State release. "If my runners race what I think they are capable of racing, we'll have two top-100 places. There's going to be 300 plus at this meet, so to potentially have two top-100 finishes in our inaugural season would be amazing." Said Guider: "It's an honor to be able to attend this meet. It's exciting knowing that Luis and I will be the first runners from Cleveland State to race (at nationals)." Said Perez: "It's going to be an amazing experience. I can't wait to see the different levels of competition so that I can figure out what to improve on."

* Jonas Simon of Tennessee Wesleyan made the All-AAC men's cross country first team announced Tuesday, and Bulldogs teammates John Gould and T.J. Tupps made the second team. Simon and Cody Demalavez were all-freshman honorees. Chattanoogan Sarah Kate Gartman of Milligan was a women's All-AAC first-teamer after finishing second in the league meet, and Wesleyan's Hannah Rhodes made the second team. TWU's Hailey Polillo made the all-freshman team.
