Savage returning to Sewanee to talk about his Alabama book

Former Sewanee quarterback and baseball standout Phil Savage, who became an NFL general manager, analyst on Alabama football radio broadcasts and executive director of the Senior Bowl, will be speaking at his alma mater at 1 p.m. EDT Friday, and the public is invited. Savage will be talking about his new book, "4th and Goal Every Day: Alabama's Relentless Pursuit of Perfection." Co-authored by Ray Glier, it has a preface by Alabama coach Nick Saban. Savage, who graduated from Sewanee in 1987, was a UA graduate assistant coach before beginning his NFL career as a defensive assistant for Saban under then-Browns head coach Bill Belichick. After his talk in Convocation Hall at Sewanee, he will field questions and sign copies of the book.

Volleyball

* North Alabama ended visiting Lee University's six-match volleyball winning streak with a 3-1 Gulf South victory Tuesday. Set scores were 17-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-18 for UNA (11-2, 1-0). Silvia Sartori and Brooke Wilsman had 12 and nine kills for Lee (6-2, 0-1), which got 19 assists from Sadie Johnson, 15 digs from MaKayla Beebe and 13 assists from Kristi Farley.

* Marissa Langford had 13 kills and fellow Cleveland High graduate Kellee Geren had 34 assists as Milligan College beat visiting Bryan 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-13) in AAC volleyball. Hope Burnett had eight kills, Veronica Salas 14 assists and Kristen Parrish 11 digs for Bryan (2-12, 1-3).

Soccer

* Lee's Summer Lanter from Soddy-Daisy was the Gulf South women's soccer player of the week and teammate McKenzie Bricker was the defender of the week after the Lady Flames went 2-0 last weekend. Lanter, the 2016 GSC player of the year, netted three goals in the two matches, and Bricker scored a goal in addition to being a leader in the back as the Lady Flames allowed only goal combined.

* Makena Giles sandwiched two goals around one by Ruth Rosales as the Bryan women (4-2, 2-0) beat visiting Reinhardt 3-0 in AAC soccer Tuesday, but the Bryan men lost 3-2 in the second overtime after leading 2-0 late in regulation. Dino Jones and Jonathan Ricketts scored for the Lions (5-4, 1-1). Giles and the Lions' Charlie Clarke added to their AAC honors by being named Tennessee Sports Writers Association players of the week.

* Host Tennessee Wesleyan beat the Union (Ky.) women 5-1 but lost 2-0 to the Union men in an AAC doubleheader Tuesday. Chloe Rootes, Siobhan Patterson, Livia Walker, Rachel Bean and Kelsey Brown scored for the TWU women (3-2, 2-0), and Bean, Lauren Cunningham and Samantha Green had assists.

* Birmingham-Southern won 2-1 at Covenant in Division III women's soccer Tuesday. Molly Kate McClearn scored from a Kyra Duble assist for Covenant (4-2). BSC is 6-2.

Golf

* The Dalton State women's golf team, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA, finished fourth at 600 in the SCAD-Atlanta Fall Invitational at The Oaks Course in Covington, Ga. Tennessee Wesleyan was fifth at 620 out of nine teams. Brenau won at 594. DSC's Hannah Gasaway was second at 144 playing as an individual, and teammates Caroline Griffin and Haejin Choe tied for sixth at 148 with Tia Teiniketo tied for 12th at 151. TWU's Saylem Powell was 17th at 153, and Megan Schauer and Danielle Bates tied for 20th at 155 with DSC's Heather Nall and Isabel Rijos sharing 22nd at 156 and TWU's Ryann McCuistion tied for 25th at 157.

* The 25th-ranked Sewanee men's golf team finished fifth out of 19 teams Monday in the Rhodes College Fall Classic at the Tunica (Miss.) National course. The Tigers' 54-hole total of 880 included a 218 for Gray Matthews, tying for 17th individually, and 19th-place 219s for Tommy Oliver and Nic Vandeventer. Matthews had a final-round best 67 Monday.

* Sewanee's Meghan Symonds shot a second-round 74 Monday for an eighth-place 154 in the NCAA Division III Fall Preview at the El Campeon Golf Course in Florida. Sewanee was 10th as a team with Natalie Javadi carding a 166 and Sophia Morrill and Sarah Battye finishing at 171 and 172.
