The Covenant College men's basketball team closed out its home regular season with an 84-58 rout of Brevard on Tuesday, giving the Scots eight wins in a row and a 16-8 record. James Mitchell was 7-of-9 on 3-point shots in scoring 21 points, and Will Crumly, Caleb Haynes and Patjo Twagirayezu scored 18, 15 and 13. Haynes and Crumly had seven and six rebounds, and Berto Dryden had four assists and nine points that put him past 1,000 for his career.
Baseball
» Each team used six pitchers as Young Harris College edged host Lee University 4-3 in baseball Tuesday. Six Lee batters had one hit each, Miguel Pimentel's being a double. Fernando Ortiz and Brayden Ware also had RBIs for the Flames (3-4), who scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on bases-loaded hit batters. A Spencer Mossburg single and two walks preceded the HBPs.
» Bryan College improved its 2018 baseball record to 9-0 with a 14-4 win over visiting Toccoa Falls on Tuesday. Miguel Lopez was solid on the mound, allowing five hits and three runs in seven innings, and the Lions ended the game an inning early with a six-run eighth. Wade Weinburger homered among three hits and drove in four runs, and Fernando Garcia also had three hits with Lake Burris and Trevor Behrent adding two apiece with three and two RBIs. David Scoggins homered and John Hennen was 1-for-1 with a two-run triple.
» Noah Hill was 4-for-5 and Logan Peterson was 3-for-5, each with an RBI, as Cleveland State won 6-1 Tuesday at Georgia Highlands. Also for the Cougars (2-2), Joey Roberson was 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI and Noah Peterson scored two runs and batted in one. Ryan Inches pitched the first five innings and four relievers followed with a scoreless inning each.
Track & Field
» The Lee University indoor track and field teams had 11 top-four finishes in the Dunamis Super Meet at the LakePoint Champions Center at Emerson, Ga., last weekend, with three in the women's 1-mile run and twins Justin and Josiah Brooks providing three men's top-twos and a fourth place. Justin won the 200-meter dash and was second in the 400, and his brother was second in the 60 and the triple jump and fourth in the 200. Lee's Evan Hansen was third in men's high jump. Also for the Flames, Jared Herzog was sixth in the 800 and Daniel Surman was sixth in pole vault. The Lady Flames' Amy Carpenter, Becca Umbarger and Audrey Smith were second through fourth with Logan Hernandez eighth in the mile, and Emily Buwalda was third in the 800 with Charlee Boxall fifth and Carpenter eighth. Mikayla Beeler was fourth in the 400. Camilla Sims was seventh in shot put with a school record (12.76 meters), and Hannah Buttolph was seventh in high jump. Meanwhile, in Allendale, Mich., the Flames' Harold Smith ran a provisional national qualifying time of 1:52.34 in the 800 - the best for an NCAA Division II South Region runner this season.
» Covenant wrapped up its indoor track season Monday at the Southern Indoor Challenge at the Birmingham CrossPlex, and the Lady Scots' Lilly Smith and Margaret Fitch were second in the mile run, Smith with a program-record 5:23.89. Michelann Settle set another school record with a third-place 11:03.36 in the 3000, and Hannah Samuels was third in the women's 5000. Jonathan George reset the Covenant men's record in the mile with a third-place 4:32.78, and the Scots finished both second and third in the distance medley relay. In all the Covenant athletes set nine school indoor records.
