Area Sports Notes: Dalton State women's golfers lead Phoenix tournament

Dalton State's No. 2-ranked NAIA women's golf team leads the Phoenix Invitational after a first-round 300 Monday at Old Hickory (Tenn.) Country Club. No. 9 William Carey is second at 309. DSC's Katie Dalton shares the individual lead at 74, teammates Isabel Rijos and Hannah Gasaway are tied for third at 75 and Tia Teiniketo is sixth at 76.

» Marshall Kent on Monday became the first Covenant College golfer ever to hit a hole-in-one in collegiate competition. He aced the second hole of the Wynlakes Intercollegiate in Montgomery, Ala., but wound up at 88 for the round as Covenant shot a first-day 336 and is last in the 16-school field that includes 11 of NCAA Division III's top 50 teams. Host Huntingdon, ranked No. 2, leads at 295. Nathan Hawkins led the Scots with a 79, followed by Josh Wall at 83 and Will Mayfield at 86.

Baseball

» Hunter Oliver batted in five runs as the Cleveland State baseball team battered the visiting Bryan College junior varsity 15-5 and 11-1 on Monday. He was 2-for-4 with a first-inning three-run home run in game one, when Trey Vanderpool was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs and Cameron Hankins was 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored. Logan Peterson was 2-for-2 and scored twice, Noah Hill was 1-for-2 with a two-run double and two runs, Joey Roberson was 1-for-1 with two walks and two RBIs, and Brandon Mason doubled twice. Tanner Brummett hit a grand slam for Bryan. Jackson Etter (5-0) pitched a six-inning two-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Cougars (22-11) in game two, while Hooper Mills was 3-for-3 with two doubles, Cameron Payne and Caleb Collins matched Oliver with two RBIs and Tucker Mendenhall scored three runs.

Tennis

» Covenant senior Chris Cox was chosen the USA South men's tennis player of the week after going 2-0 at both No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles, with Matthew Harvie, in the Scots' weekend wins. Cox tied a school record with his 50th career singles victory (he's 50-30) and is 11-3 this year in singles and 13-2 with Harvie.

Lacrosse

» Sewanee junior midfielder Ryan Stubits is the Southern Athletic Association men's lacrosse defensive player of the week for his part in two victories. He won 20 of 26 faceoffs and collected 19 ground balls. He's third in the SAA with 59 ground balls for the season and fourth with 111 faceoff wins.
