Area sports notes: Two UTC golfers in top five at tourney

Led by Monica San Juan's 67, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team shot a season-best total for the second day in a row Saturday (289) and was in eighth place at 584 in the 12-team Princess Anne Invitational at Virginia Beach. Sacramento State took over the lead at 573, two shots better than Campbell and Central Florida. San Juan was third individually at 139, and UTC's Maddy McDanel was tied for fourth at 140 with Rheagan Hall at 149 and Michaela Kulhankova (playing as an individual) at 150.

Volleyball

* UTC won 3-0 at home Saturday against Mercer by the set scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-20 and now is 7-12 and tied for fourth in the Southern Conference at 4-4. Setter Jaquelyn Langhaim had 25 assists and four aces and Dani Szczepanski and Emily Plumlee had eight and seven kills for the Mocs. Miranda Elpers added three aces.

* Lee University breezed to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-12) Gulf South Conference victory at Auburn-Montgomery with 31 assists by Hanna Matthews, nine kills by Bailey Kress, eight kills by Alex Reuter and 11 digs and three aces by MaKayla Beebe. Lee is 9-11, 7-2 in the GSC.

* Covenant College won 3-1 (25-12, 19-25, 25-13, 28-26) in USA South play at winless Brevard, where Sara Delk had 15 kills and 15 digs and Sophie Puertas contributed 47 assists and 14 digs. Also for the Lady Scots (8-10, 6-1), Alexa Spurling had 12 kills, Allie Jakes and Hannah Harris eight kills apiece, Hannah Stewart 18 digs and Emily Moore and Leah Buys 11 digs each.

* Sewanee lost 3-1 (25-20, 14-25, 25-20, 25-21) in Southern Athletic Association play at Division III 21st-ranked Berry, but Lilly Reilly and Destiny Stewart had 13 and 11 kills and 10 and 15 digs, and Constance Connolly had 37 assists and 13 digs for the Tigers (15-5, 4-4). Peyton Parent had 24 digs, Sydney White added 15 and Ellie Pedersen and Stephanie Price each had eight kills. Berry is 13-2, 9-0.

* Tennessee Wesleyan rose to 8-3 in the AAC and gave Point its first league loss, 3-1 (28-26, 25-19, 18-25, 25-15), as Gabi Catt had 33 assists and 11 digs, Sovanna Ramirez 25 digs, Allana Knowles and Marjorie Smith 11 kills each, Avery Hilliard seven block solos and seven kills and Sydney Ritten nine kills, three aces and 10 digs.

* Bryan College lost 3-1 (25-16, 25-16, 11-25, 25-22) to Reinhardt and dropped to 9-13, 5-7 in AAC play but got 10 kills from Anna Owens, seven from Mariah Dunlop, 14 assists and 11 digs from Veronica Salas, 20 digs from Rheagan Keen and 11 digs and three aces from Macenzie Krause. Reinhardt is 19-4, 10-0.

Soccer

* Jonathan Ricketts had two goals and an assist and Charlie Clarke also scored twice as Bryan battered visiting Dalton State College 6-0 in an NAIA men's match Saturday. Jason Ward and Felipe Teruel had the other goals for the Lions (6-4-2), who outshot DSC (4-7-1) 23-8 with a 13-3 margin on goal.

* Visiting Tennessee Wesleyan edged the Point women 1-0 and lost 2-1 to the undefeated Point men in AAC play. Livia Walker scored at 69:17 from a Dayna Randall assist for the Lady Bulldogs (4-5-1, 4-2-1), and Kelly Morine secured the shutout. Reigning Tennessee Sports Writers Association player of the week Harry Baggaley scored from Tom Lake's assist for the Bulldogs (8-4, 4-2), after Juan Gomez scored twice in the first half for Point (9-0-1, 4-0).

* Kailey Burrell scored from Hannah Rodehaver's assist early in the second half and Rachel Lemay made 10 saves as the Covenant women (5-6-1, 2-2) won 1-0 in USAS play at Brevard (7-4, 3-2). The Covenant men (8-5-1, 5-2-1) won 5-1 at Methodist as Parker Owen had two goals, Josh Brower a goal and two assists, Jake Major a goal and Paul Lemay six saves. There also was an own goal.

* Sewanee won the men's game 4-0 but lost the women's matchup 1-0 in two overtimes in an SAA doubleheader Friday at Hendrix. Hanna Judycki made five saves for the Sewanee women (4-7-2, 1-1). Kyle Johnston scored twice for the men (5-5-1, 1-2), while Alpo Sipila had the first goal and an assist and Severin Velasco nettedd the second-half goal.

Field Hockey

* Sewanee lost its SAA opener Saturday, 3-2 at home to Rhodes, and is 6-3 overall. Ceara Caffrey and Hannah Tompkins scored from Hadley Meadows and Elisabeth Domittner assists and Rachel Blum made 13 saves for the Tigers. Hailey Mules had two goals and an assist for Rhodes (7-1, 2-1).

Sports Psychology

* Sewanee is hosting a sports psychology seminar at 8 EDT tonight in Blackman Auditorium, and athletes from all sports and levels are invited. Author, coach and psychologist Daniel Stewart will address "Turning Setbacks Into Comebacks." Email kmgordy@sewanee.edu for information.
