Area sports notes: UTC women's golfers 11th in Franklin

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golf team slipped to a collective 304 Saturday and 11th place in the Mason Rudolph Championships at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tennessee. The Mocs take a 36-hole 596 into the final round, led by Maddy McDanel and Esme Hamilton in ties for 27th and 29th individually at 147 (3 over par) and 148. Rheagan Hall was at 152 and Dorota Zalewska and Kirsty Beckwith were at 154. McDanel shot a team-best 73 in round two. Vanderbilt and Charlotte shared the team lead at 575, and Clemson was third at 578 in the field of 15. Mercer was one stroke ahead of UTC.

Soccer

* The Lee University men's team lost for the first time this season, 2-1 Saturday night at nationally third-ranked Young Harris, and gets to host the 2018 NCAA Division II national champion - Barry University of Florida - at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Young Harris (4-0) scored in the 17th and 47th minutes but had just an 11-9 edge in shots, 5-4 on goal. Tanner Carter followed his own shot for the 3-1-1 Flames' goal in the 42nd minute.

* The Covenant College men defeated visiting Pfeiffer 4-0 on Saturday for the Scots' third USA South shutout win in four days. Mercer Stout's league-high seventh goal of the season put them ahead in the 13th minute, and Jesse Riggs made it 2-0 less than a minute later with a penalty kick after Josh Brower was fouled inside the box. Brower netted his fifth goal of 2019 in the 54th minute, and Paul Lemay needed only two saves for the shutout. Covenant (6-0-1, 3-0) is off to its best season start since 2004.

* The Sewanee men are 5-1-1 after their third consecutive 3-0 win, this one against visiting Guilford on Saturday. Evan Poole scored all three goals in the second half, the first two with assists from Tashinga Vhumisai and Austin Young, and James Murray's clean sheet included four saves.

* Addie Roemershauser scored three times for the Sewanee women in a 6-0 home victory over Agnes Scott. Isabel Washko netted the first goal from a Mena Kerrison assist in the 13th minute, and in the second half Bea Richardson had a goal and an assist for Abbie Kleckley. The Tigers (2-4-1) had a 14-0 margin in shots on goal and a 26-1 bulge in shots overall.

* The Tennessee Wesleyan University women won 3-1 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match Saturday as Julia Ruiz Vargas and Chloe Rootes each had a goal and was part of a double assist. Helene Lium Nyhus also scored for the Lady Bulldogs (5-2, 2-1). The TWU men (7-1-1) tied 1-1 through two overtime periods in a nonconference game at the University of the Cumberlands. Montel McKenzie scored the equalizer for the Bulldogs in the 34th minute, and Nick Croucher made four saves.

Volleyball

* Arkansas State closed out its championship of Virginia Tech's tournament with a 3-0 defeat of UTC on Saturday, by the set scores of 25-21, 25-14, 25-11. Arkansas State is 9-3 for the season. For the Mocs (5-8), who begin Southern Conference play Wednesday night at Samford, senior Dani Szczepanski surpassed 800 career kills with a match-high 11, and Maddie Halsey set 24 assists. Megan Kaufman had 11 digs and Sarah Root had seven kills.

* Led by 22 kills on .571 hitting by Cambriea Hill, Shepherd University rose to 12-0 with a 3-0 win (25-21, 25-20, 25-21) Saturday over Lee in the final match of the Lee Invitational. Quinne Daoust and Bailey Kress had eight kills each and Abby Stroh added seven for Lee (6-4); Hanna Matthews had 26 assists.

* Covenant is 1-9 after losing two 3-0 matches Saturday at Berry College, by set scores of 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 to Millsaps (9-5) and 25-9, 25-13, 25-10 to Berry. Emily Moore had 23 digs and Leah Buys produced 18 assists against Millsaps, when Jess Chesrown and Allie Jakes led in kills with seven and six.

* Sewanee lost 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 27-25) in a Southern Athletic Association match at Hendrix (8-2, 2-0) but got eight kills and 13 digs from Sydney White and four aces with 21 assists from Constance Connolly. Destiny Stewart also had 13 digs and Lilly Reilly added 12 for the Tigers (8-4, 1-1), and Stephanie Price had seven kills and four block assists.

Football

* The host Sewanee Tigers trailed by four touchdowns at halftime and were down 32 points against Birmingham-Southern before ultimately falling 49-30 to the Panthers in the Southern Athletic Association opener for both Division III teams.

Robert Shufford ran for 194 yards and two touchdowns and Trevor Oakes passed for a score and ran for one for the Panthers (2-1).

For Sewanee (0-3), Notre Dame High School graduate Alex Darras was 23-for-44 passing for 342 yards and three touchdowns and averaged 41.8 yards on five punts while Cyrus McCullough caught nine throws for a career-high 192 yards and two scores.
