Prep roundup: GPS, Signal Mountain among state soccer qualifiers

GPS remained unbeaten as it advanced to the TSSAA Division II-AA soccer state tournament with an impressive 4-1 win over rival Baylor on Saturday.

The Bruisers moved on thanks to a pair of goals from Kennedy Ball and one each from Ashley Grant and Sasha Carbone, who scored unassisted and also assisted on another. Sydney Morris and Hayden Wise also had assists for GPS (14-0).

The girls' soccer state tournaments for all classifications will be played this coming week in Murfreesboro.

In Saturday's Class A sectional round, Signal Mountain, which has won each of the past two state championships, returned to the state tournament with a convincing 10-2 win over Smith County. Kara Wilson scored seven goals and added two assists to help lead the Lady Eagles (12-2-2). Camilla Mincey also scored twice, while Ava Duffey had a goal and two assists and keeper Reilly Furr made four saves.

In other state sectional games, East Hamilton advanced to the Class AA tournament with a 1-0 win over Kingston, while McMinn Central's season ended with a 1-0 loss to Livingston Academy. In DII-A, Battle Ground Academy defeated Boyd Buchanan 2-0, St. George's beat Notre Dame 8-0 and University School of Jackson beat Silverdale Baptist Academy 9-1.

McMinn County advanced to the Class AAA tournament with a 3-2 win over Franklin County.

FOOTBALL

Adairsville 42, Coahulla Creek 14: The host Tigers scored 35 points in the second quarter to roll out to a 42-0 halftime lead en route to the GHSA Region 6-AAA victory. Quarterback Conner Crunkleton passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more, with Eli Agnew rushing for 80 yards in the first half for Adairsville (4-2, 3-1). Coahulla Creek is 1-5, 0-4.

VOLLEYBALL

In the second round of the GHSA state playoffs, Heritage swept Chestatee 3-0 in Class AAAA. Kallie Carter had eight kills and three blocks for the winners, with Lauren Frazier adding seven kills, 12 assists and eight digs, Aubrey Blankenship nine digs and Zoe Ha six aces. Heritage will travel to Central-Carroll for Wednesday's quarterfinal round.

Also in Class AAAA, Northwest Whitfield swept Luella and will travel to Islands, a 3-2 winner over Fayette County. The Lady Bruins (32-10) served 23 aces in the sweep, led by Emma Hayes' nine. She also added 14 kills and six digs, with Emma Allen getting 14 kills, nine assists and seven digs, Kiera Hughes 18 assists and four aces, and Kiersten Maynard five aces.

In Class AAA, Area 6 No. 1 seed LaFayette won a tight 3-2 match over Greater Atlanta Christian School and will host Morgan County on Wednesday.

Sonoraville swept Oconee County, 25-16, 25-19, 25-21, and will travel to Richmond Academy, a 3-0 winner over Jackson, in Wednesday's quarterfinals. The Phoenix (39-13) trailed 12-2 in the first set before ending it on a 23-4 rally. Abby Chambers had eight kills and 13 digs, Raleigh Cooper six kills, six aces, five digs and seven assists, and Alley Cole nine kills and four blocks for the winners.

In Class AA/A, Gordon Lee was a 3-1 winner over Lovett, 25-14, 20-25, 25-15, 25-18. Arilyn Lee led the Lady Trojans (25-11) with 15 kills, with Brooklyn Hudson adding 11 kills, four blocks and six digs. Sam Carmer contributed four aces and 10 assists, M.K . Roberts six kills and five assists, and Annie McDaniel nine digs for the winners, who will host Toombs County on Wednesday.

Dade County's season ended with a sweep at Pace Academy.

In Class AAAAA, Calhoun was swept by St. Pius X.

SOFTBALL

The quarterfinal round of the GHSA fastpitch playoffs will begin Tuesday with best-of-three series involving three northwest Georgia programs - each a reigning state champion. In Class AAAA, Heritage (27-6) will travel to Bainbridge (12-5-1) in search of the Generals' third consecutive title. Ringgold (21-15), the No. 4 seed from Region 6-AAA, will seek to continue its bid to repeat with a trip to Pierce County (22-10), while Gordon Lee (27-3) extends the quest for its 10th overall title as it hosts Wilcox County (20-7) in Class A public.
