Things to do in Chattanooga area this weekend include barbecue festival, film screenings, pickleball

This weekend's events include an inaugural barbecue festival, a multitude of film screenings and the opening of Chattanooga's first official pickleball courts. Here's a chronology.

ARTS

– ClearStory Arts, 1673 S. Holtzclaw Ave., will have an opening reception for its latest exhibition "Middle Ground" from 6-8 p.m. Friday. The exhibition features paintings by local artists and Chattanooga natives Robert Schoolfield and Jet Smith. Their works utilize abstract, expressionist and surrealist techniques. The reception also coincides with the gallery's First Friday event which, in addition to the current gallery exhibit, showcases open studios, a mini-market featuring artworks made by local artists, live demonstrations and more. — Reflection Riding, 400 Garden Road, will host a Terrariums 101 class Saturday 10:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn how to build their own mini-ecosystem as well as the functions of the terrariums' layers and the minimal maintenance the environments require. Deanna Walker, a naturalist and terrarium builder, will guide the class through each step of building a terrarium while explaining the layers of the mini-ecosystems. Supplies are included in the cost of the program, and registration is required. Member admission is $20, nonmember admission is $25. Learn more at reflectionriding.org.

– The Hunter Museum of American Art, 10 Bluff View, will offer two classes this weekend for those interested in artistic pursuits. Both classes will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday. General admission is $20, children 17 and under are free. The Creating in Nature's Studio class will take attendees on a short walk around the Bluff View area around the museum with a naturalist from Reflection Riding. Taking inspiration from the plants and animals in the area will facilitate participants' artistic creation. Wonderful Weaving is a teenager-only, free workshop where participants will learn the basics of weaving and fabric art by creating their own pencil pouch. MUSIC

— Nightfall, a weekly summer music series, continues at 7 p.m. Friday at Miller Plaza, 850 Market St. The opener will be The New Quintet, and the headliner will be J2B2, the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band. There will be an art market starting at 6 p.m., and the food trucks will start serving at 6:30 p.m. The event is rain or shine, and admission is free. Learn more at nightfallchattanooga.com.

— Songbirds, 35 Station St., will have two events this weekend. Pink Houses: The Mellencamp Tribute will be a night of John Mellencamp classics performed by tribute band Pink Houses. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. Friday. Advanced tickets cost $15, day of show tickets cost $18. The Reggie Moss Experience will celebrate the life and birthday of musician Reggie Moss. The evening will feature performances by Nu Breed Band, Twain D Productions, The Malemen Show Band, Shirley Jones and others. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 6:45 p.m. Sunday. OUT & ABOUT

— Culture Festival, hosted by the BLVD Project and Rossville Downtown Development Authority, is a summer market that will take place from 5-9 p.m. Friday at 207 Chickamauga Ave., Rossville, Ga. Vendors will sell locally grown produce, flowers, artwork and handmade goods. There will also be a variety of food and entertainment from different cultures at the festival. — S'mores and Storytelling will take place from 7:30-8:45 p.m. Friday at Audobon Acres, 900 N. Sanctuary Road. Local storyteller Latta Johnson will be telling family-friendly stories about nature, Native American history and Chattanooga history. S'mores kits that include eight s'mores and two roasting sticks will be available for purchase. S'mores kits cost $7 for Audubon Acres members and $10 for nonmembers. — Treat Yo' Trans Self Day, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Barking Legs Theater, 1307 Dodds Ave., will provide a day of free self care services for transgender and nonbinary people. The day begins with a guided yoga session and continues with a variety of free services including barbering, waxing, manicures and clothes mending and alterations, among others provided by local businesses, creatives and vendors. — Youth Artisan Market, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Chatt Space, 5243 Little Debbie Parkway, Suite 121, will give attendees the chance to discover and support young artists in the Chattanooga area. Young artists will sell their unique handmade works including jewelry and ceramics for attendees to pick up as a new gift for themselves or others. The market also provides attendees with the opportunity to learn about the young artists' inspirations, processes and aspirations. Find more information at chattspace.com.

— The inaugural Chattanooga Sip 'N Que Festival, from 5-8 p.m. Saturday at the First Horizon Pavilion, 1826 Reggie White Blvd., will give attendees the opportunity to dine on delicious barbecue and sip on an assortment of beer, wine and whiskey samplings. The festival will feature multiple competitions for best barbecue as well as live music, food trucks and a variety of drink samples from a large lineup of breweries and distilleries. The event is presented by the Chattanooga Breakfast Rotary Club, and the proceeds will benefit the club's service projects. Tickets cost $10-75 online prior to the event. — The Colorful Hat Circus will have performances at 3 p.m and 7 p.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday at the Chattanooga Convention Center, 1 Carter St. The show will feature acrobatic performances, juggling, magic, unicycle performance and other variety show acts suitable for all ages. General admission tickets cost $25, front and center seating tickets cost $39, and children 2 and under are free and do not require a ticket if they will not take up a seat. — Peach Festival at the Chattanooga Market will be from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday at the First Horizon Pavilion, 1826 Reggie White Blvd. The market's vendors will be incorporating peach flavors, smells and themes into their handmade goods such as peach salsa, peach pastries, peach candles and peach lotions. There will also be fresh peaches available for purchase. Admission is free. — The Bessie Smith Cultural Center and Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga will present a film screening at 4 p.m. Sunday at the cultural center, 200 E. M.L. King Blvd. The screening will be of the film "The Jews and The Blues," a documentary that explores how blues music connects to the Jewish cultures of the Middle East and North Africa. The film is presented in English, and its duration is 67 minutes. Admission is free. Find more information at jewishchattanooga.com.

— The Green Thumb Garden Club of Collegedale/Ooltewah will have a meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at Chestnut Hall at the Commons, 4750 Swinyar Drive, Collegedale. The meeting will feature master gardener Ann Brown who will have a presentation on the topic of the "Home Grown National Park Movement." The movement is a new approach to environmental conservation that utilizes native plant species to support the life cycles of birds, butterflies and other wildlife. — A summer movie presentation, presented by the Boynton Lions Club of Ringgold and the Ringgold Convention and Visitors Bureau, will screen the film "Sing," an animated musical comedy released in 2016. The screening will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ringgold Depot, 155 Depot St., Ringgold, Ga. Admission is free, and concessions will be available for purchase. SPORTS

— Batter's Place Pickleball Courts will have a grand opening from 9 a.m to noon. Saturday in East Brainerd, 8011 Batters Place Road. Batter's Place will be Chattanooga's first official pickleball courts. The grand opening will feature a ribbon cutting, giveaways, music, and pickleball lessons and games. All ages are welcome. — The Chattanooga Red Wolves will play a home game against the Northern Colorado Hailstorm at 7:30 p.m Saturday at CHI Memorial Stadium, 1 Stadium Way. General admission tickets start at $13. Find more information at chattanoogaredwolves-sc.com.


THEATER

— Carpetbagger's Comedy Night will be at 9 p.m. Friday at Humanaut Studios, 1404 Cowart St. There will be a happy hour and magic show starting at 8 p.m. The main show will feature the talents of comedians from New York City as well as some Southeast favorites including T.J. Francis, Zachary Wright, Jeff Greenspan, Scott Eason and Elliott White. The night will feature drinks by Bitter Alibi. Tickets cost $12. Learn more at carpetbaggerscomedy.com.

— The Bobby Stone Film Series at the Walker Theatre, 399 McCallie Ave., will have three film screenings this weekend. Adult tickets cost $13.50, and tickets for students and adults 65 and older cost $11.50. Learn more at tivolichattanooga.com. "The Road" will screen at 7 p.m. Friday. The film, based on the novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy, follows a father and son as they try to survive the dangerous landscape of a post-apocalyptic America. The film is rated R. "Top Gun: Maverick" will screen at 2 p.m. Saturday. The film, a sequel to "Top Gun" from 1986, follows Tom Cruise's character from the original film Pete "Maverick" Mitchell as he trains a new class of pilots for a dangerous mission while also reckoning with his fears and past. The film is rated PG-13. "Amores Perros" will screen at 7 p.m. Saturday. The film follows the overlapping and intersecting stories of multiple characters whose lives are connected by a car crash in Mexico City. The film is rated R.

— "Seussical" will be presented by the Signal Mountain Playhouse at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the playhouse's outdoor venue, 205-311 Rolling Way. "Seussical" is a musical comedy based on several stories by Dr. Seuss. The playhouse is a nonprofit volunteer organization providing young people with community activity in the summer through theater productions. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs for additional comfort. Tickets are sold at the door starting at 6 p.m. Tickets cost $5 for children 12 and under, and $15 for all others (cash or checks only). Learn more at smph.org.

— The Chattanooga Theatre Centre, 400 River St., will have a family-friendly summer picnic event from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday on the center's lawn. There will be live music performed by Premier Jazz Orchestra, an interactive performance by Playful Evolving Monsters and a musical preview of the center's upcoming production "Something Rotten." There will be hamburgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers to eat as well as ice cream from Clumpies Ice Cream Co. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets for seating. Admission includes food, nonalcoholic beverages and parking. Cost is $25 for adults and $15 for children 13 and under. Learn more at theatrecentre.com.

— The Tennessee Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater, 201 Chestnut St., will have an early access fan event for the release of "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One" at 7 p.m. Monday. Ticketholders will receive an exclusive collector's print and an Impossible Mission Force pin, while supplies last. The film is the latest installment in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise starring Tom Cruise. The film will screen at the theater through July 20.
