In June 2014, CHI Memorial Hospital officials blessed and dedicated the Guerry Heart and Vascular Center, the centerpiece of a building project that was first announced in August 2006 and delayed for two years by the Great Recession.

The initial announcement had a $320 million price tag, a five-year timeline and was projected to add 700 new jobs and $39 million to the hospital's payroll.

After a pause forced by the Great Recession, hospital officials announced a revised, three-phase expansion in 2011, with an estimated cost of $380 million.

Three years later, the Guerry Heart and Vascular Center was formally opened. James Hobson, then Memorial CEO, stated the facility was named in honor of the Chattanooga family who contributed $4 million to the hospital's expansion and has had a long history with its growth and development.
