Multiple law enforcement officers opened fire on a fugitive this afternoon, Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader said.

The U.S. Marshals Service was leading the investigation, along with other agencies. According to Walker County 911, the Walker County Sheriff's Office was also involved.

The suspect, who has been identified as Thomas Campbell, 31, was wanted outside of his jurisdiction, said Catoosa County Sheriff Gary Sisk.

The officers found Campbell around 3:30 p.m. on Halls Valley Drive in Trion, on the Chattooga County-Walker County border.

Campbell was armed, Schrader said, and a "confrontation ensued." After someone shot Campbell, paramedics airlifted him to a local hospital. Schrader was not sure of the Campbell's condition.

Schrader requested agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation examine the shooting. Greg Ramey, special agent in charge of the agency's northwest Georgia bureau, did not return multiple calls seeking comment.
