A woman and six children escaped without injury from a kitchen fire at a Peachtree Street home, the Chattanooga Fire Department said Friday.

The call came shortly after 4 p.m. and firefighters at first feared some children were trapped in the house, spokesman Bruce Garner said in a news release.

Firefighters determined everyone was out and took about 20 minutes to control the blaze, which had spread from the kitchen into other parts of the home. No injuries were reported, Garner said.

The fire was blamed on food left unattended on the stove, he said.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross were called in to provide assistance to the family.

Garner said city firefighters also battled a fire at The Enclave in Riverview on Friday.

Firefighter saw heavy smoke coming from the eaves of the two-story brick house, he said. No one was home, so they forced their way in and contained the fire to a couple of rooms.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Garner said.
