A 22-year-old Chatsworth, Georgia, man was charged Monday with cruelty to children in the first degree stemming from life-threatening injuries sustained by his 2-month-old son, Georgia Bureau of Investigation officials said.

Joel Maggi, the infant's father, was booked at the Hamilton County Jail on the charge.

The GBI was contacted by the Murray County Sheriff's Office after the Murray County Division of Family and Children Services office contacted authorities after reports were received by Children's Hospital at Erlanger in Chattanooga, GBI officials said in a statement. The infant was transported to the children's hospital unresponsive and with unexplained life-threatening injuries.

The GBI and sheriff's office will continue its joint investigation, officials said.

There was no other information on the child's most recent condition.

Once complete, the case will be turned over to the Murray County District Attorney's Office for prosecution, officials said.
