The Dalton Public Safety Commission named Cliff Cason the city's new police chief this morning.

The commission held a meeting at 8:30 to choose between Cason and Chris Cooke, according to a Tweet from the department's official account. Cason has worked in the department since 1993. He was the assistant chief under Jason Parker, who left to become the Dalton city manager.

Cooke, a support services captain, has worked for Dalton police since 1996. He has been a planning and research manager, supervisor of the department's drug unit and patrol division commander.

The Dalton City Council will welcome Cason to his new post at tonight's 6 p.m. meeting, according to the agenda.
