Some school systems, businesses and government offices in the greater Chattanooga area are closing or delaying opening on Tuesday because of the threat of inclement weather.
Hamilton County Schools is closed Tuesday, according to a news release.
All school-aged childcare locations also are closed, along with athletic events, practices and school activities after school. Games will be rescheduled, according to the release.
Spokesman Tim Hensley said a variety of factors go into the decision to close schools including forecasts from the National Weather Service, road conditions and recommendations from Hamilton County's Emergency Services and feedback from district officials.
"It all comes down to if we can have buses out on the road and if we can get students and people to and from school safely," Hensley said.
District officials will also closely monitor weather and roads on Tuesday. Some district personnel might drive out to "known trouble spots" as the district decides if schools will remain closed Wednesday. A decision on Wednesday will be made Tuesday afternoon, the release states.
All Chattanooga State Community College campuses are closed Tuesday. Officials will continue to monitor the forecast to make a determination about Wednesday.
UTC will also be closed Tuesday.
Chattanooga Gas is suspending its regular operations Tuesday. Service representatives will respond only to emergencies, according to a news release.
Siskin Children's Institute will delay opening until 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Bradley County Schools and Cleveland City Schools will be closed Tuesday because of the predicted wintry weather. Polk County Schools will also be closed Tuesday.
Southern Adventist University will delay opening until 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
Lee University classes will be canceled Tuesday morning before chapel, according to Twitter. Chapel will convene as usual at 10:40 a.m. and a normal class schedule will follow. Offices will open at 1 p.m.

The Chattanooga Heart Institute at CHI Memorial and CHI Memorial's Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention Program will delay opening until 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
The BarkMore Pet Hotel & Daycare will be closed Tuesday for daycare.
All campuses of Georgia Northwestern Technical College will be closed Tuesday. Day and evening classes, events and activities are canceled. A decision regarding delays or closures for Wednesday will be made Tuesday afternoon.
Because of to the predictions of snow and ice making roads unsafe for travel, Dalton Public Schools will be closed Tuesday for all students and staff. Students will have a Digital Learning Day and should access information on the district's webpage, www.daltonpublicschools.com, or their school's webpage for more information.
All Dalton city offices will be closed Tuesday.
Whitfield County Schools also will be closed Tuesday.
The threat of snow has led to a two-day delay from Tuesday to Thursday of the Cleveland/Bradley County Chamber of Commerce annual meeting.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced this morning that state offices in northwest Georgia will be closed Tuesday, as meteorologist predict snow could fall in the region.
The closures include offices in Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Gordon, Murray, Walker and Whitfield counties.
Kemp held a joint meeting with officials from the Georgia Department of Transportation and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency on Sunday, a spokesman for his office said. Forecasters have predicted counties in northwest Georgia could receive up to 2 inches of snow on Tuesday, creating potentially icy roads.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey issued a state of emergency ahead of a winter storm expected to bring snow and hazardous driving conditions to a large portion of the state.
